Does anyone have personal experience and advice on what they feel is the best and safest throttle lock for an R1200R. I have been EXTREMELY hesitant to purchase one for safety reasons, but think it may be a viable option for a long road trip. Opinions???

Personally I use a "Cramp Buster" rather than a throttle lock. Makes me feel a little more secure.

Others here use a big "O" ring between the bar end and throttle to make holding throttle on easier.

Try them both, they're inexpensive and easy.

Rolando, there's been quite a bit of discussion on this issue in general and that product in particular.

I chose the Kaoko brand because its big teeth engage my gloved hand easier.

I use a lock only on long straight stretches of mostly empty highways. Under those conditions I feel a lock is both useful and safe.

I also use a Throttle Rocker brand palm rest. It uses a velcro strap and holds its position better than the plastic spring action of a Crampbuster I used to have. Getting the position just right is important: too high and I engage the throttle when I don't want to just by resting my hand on the grip. Too low and I have to flex my wrist too much to keep it engaged. Once you find the sweet spot, I think you'll get used to way less grip on the throttle.

I recommend the NEP Throttle Lock, under $20.00 works perfectly and is easy to override should the need arise. Here's the link to my "how to do it"

It took less than 1/2 hour to modify and install.

I have a Throttlemeister and love it. Very easy for me to set - I can roll it on with my pinky. You can set the friction point so that it just takes the pressure off holding the throttle in one place, but still easy to move. Obviously you lose the "let go" aspect when using it, but I only use it when slabbing on freeway, never in busy traffic.

I didn't learn about the cheap O-ring option until after I got the Throttlemeister - I might have gone that route if I was sure it would hold consistently. I like the look of the Throttlemeister (black) - it may not be as hand easy as the "gear" models, but it sure looks unobtrusive. Fits with the look I've got going on the bike.

I use the O-ring special method. It works well once it is on. I don't have a great way for engaging and disengaging it though. It usually have to look at it, pull the clutch, and take my hand of the gas to roll the ring on/off. Other than that you just have to select the O-ring size according to what you want to accomplish, i.e. lock vs. friction drag. Can't beat the price though, and for Interstate riding some kind of cruise control is a must. If it weren't so expensive I would give the Kaoko a try.

Thanks for the replies everyone. You guys are always so helpful. I pulled the trigger and bought the Throttle-Meister today. I got the flat black one. Damn, it looks good on my bike. I was hesitant to getting one, but the guys at the dealership coached me on the installation (I had heard of problems with the washers and getting the right 'response'). It works perfect. I will never use it in heavy traffic. Mostly on dead stretches of highway--flat and straight. Too many years of working in a pharmacy have made the carpal tunnel syn very obvious.

I will post pics of my beauty soon. I am working on painting/pin-striping the tail light section. When I have that done, I will be ready to show her off. I will be done with projects on that bike.....well, at least for a little while!

I know you already bought one, and I'm late once again.... but how would you get photos like this while cruising in Mexico without a throttle lock?

ChiTown, you are insane, but you sure know hot to ride. I have never seen a roadster so many places as yours. Insane.

Honestly, I've spent enough time on my bike, and every once in a while I get bored.

With the throttle lock on, at normal cruising speed around 80 mph, you can steer the bike with drag from the wind with your hands out at your side. It's fun! Really! Try it sometime!

I'll admit to once - having the throttle lock on as I passed an endless line of HD's single-filing going the other way on Rt 7 in Vermont (right near where the RA Rally is gonna be in 2 weeks..) After waving about 200 times (they weren't fully indoctrinated RUBS, so they still waved - or at least lifted the left pinky finger..), it really started getting boring, so I started waving with both hands. Got some interesting reactions to that..
