backfiring

I've just replaced my cat with a Y piece by motad (here in the UK). I've left the standard silencer/muffler on. Sometimes on the over run I get a small backfire/pop. I've got a tiny leak where the silencer/muffler joins the Y piece, but I do not think that this is the issue.

The sound from the bike is now a little louder, deeper but not as much as I had expected. I do think it picks up better though, but hey that could just be a perception rather than reality. :?

I've tried removing the silencer/muffler and fitting a chrome tip to the cat, I liked the sound but not the look. If the pipe from the cat pointed down then that would be my preferred option. It is a shame that the standard silencer/muffler covers up so much of the lovely looking back wheel. :( With cat and chrome tip it backfired too.

What I would like to know is; is the backfire going to do any damage to the engine?

TIA

Stu

Mine backfires all the time, and so far it hasn't done anything but stain the heatshield on my saddle bag black. Its been over 10K that its been like this, and no issues, so I don't think it's going to do anything.

Mine has a Remus Y without the cat converter and backfires whenever I back off the throttle quickly. No harm done other than making others jumpy.
