backfiring

I've just replaced my cat with a Y piece by motad (here in the UK). I've left the standard silencer/muffler on. Sometimes on the over run I get a small backfire/pop. I've got a tiny leak where the silencer/muffler joins the Y piece, but I do not think that this is the issue.
The sound from the bike is now a little louder, deeper but not as much as I had expected. I do think it picks up better though, but hey that could just be a perception rather than reality.
I've tried removing the silencer/muffler and fitting a chrome tip to the cat, I liked the sound but not the look. If the pipe from the cat pointed down then that would be my preferred option. It is a shame that the standard silencer/muffler covers up so much of the lovely looking back wheel.
With cat and chrome tip it backfired too.
What I would like to know is; is the backfire going to do any damage to the engine?
TIA
