Selling my cherished R12 (now sold,...sadly)

With a heavy heart I 've decided to sell my beautiful black R1200R. Until I can afford a new Classic (in a year or two) I 've decided to have a change - back to a Triumph triple (the new Triumph Tiger 800XC). Its a great bike and since I live close to the Triumph factory, seems like a good move to support our UK manufacturing industry. God knows we need it.

Have a low trade in offer so decided to invite offer for some of the more desirable bmw accessories on the open market. See the (Buy/Sell section). Thinking of offering the following kit (all immaculate)

BMW hard panniers
BMW pannier liners - used once
BMW soft tail case (expandable & fully waterproof)
Comfort seat (as new)
BMW battery charger (3 months old)
BMW touring screen

Need some advice ..

Anyone got any idea what any of these things are worth?
If I sell the bike privately, is it better to sell these extras with the bike or can you normally do better selling BMW gear seperately?

First try to sell the bike with all of the accessories with it. I just bought my R1200R and a BIG buying point for me was the bike had ALL of the accessories with it.

Well, if was BUYING a bike, I'd say leave all the stuff on it. That way I'd get a screaming good deal.

BUT...you almost always get more total dollars if you sell the accessories. So, if I was a SELLER, I'd sell most of the accessories and offer the bike at a rock-bottom price all-stock. A low asking price gets attention and gets offers.

Don't know about the UK market, but here in the colonies those bits sell for about half of new. The side cases should probably fetch 2/3 of new since they come on the market relatively infrequently.

I have a low mileage, beautiful 1200GS with a bunch of farkles on it. I could have probably gotten $8500 fully loaded. But, I've already gotten $1500 for accessories and I'll probably get $8000 for the stock bike the first weekend I list it.

That's about the same in the US. Ebay is sometimes a good indicator for going prices. You can use the 'closed listings' feature. The side cases, especially when keyed to the bike, might be a good selling argument when kept on the bike as most people like cases. The remainder I'd sell individually.

As a seller - take it all off and either post them here, or go the Ebay route.

That was the deciding factor in which dealership I bought my R12R at..

Dealership #1 offered me about $6,000 for my used '04 R1150RS.. with all the accessories.
Dealership #2 offered me about $6,000 for my used '04 R1150RS.. as it came from the factory.

Took Dealership #2's offer - and sold off the farkles for over $1,500 Paid for a LOT of the farkles going on the R12R.

General rule of thumb - the bike will sell quicker if you leave all the goodies on it - but you won't get any more money for it.

First of all, thank you for the interest and offers made. In fact, I have just agreed a sale of the bike with all of the accessories included to a fellow BMW enthusiast in the UK. Felt it was best to give first refusal to the person buying the bike.

Don was right, the sale is quicker by including the accessories. I accept that I could have made more money by selling the pieces individually, but the buyer and I are satisfied with the deal so happy days.

Actually very sorry to see the bike go. It's the best bike I 've ever owned and will cherish the memories of riding it over the last couple of years. I 've also thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed the forum banter. Adds to the enjoyment of owning the bike . Plus, I 've got a couple of calendars to be proud of.

Will continue to pop in from time to time.

Expect the new owner will join shortly.

of course I 'll run the calendar project Don, aiming for third time lucky to get the frickin thing out on time!

Actually will not be taking a test ride on a Classic for at least a year for very good reasons - a) I know I couldn't resist the temptation to have one and b) It'd hurt my wallet too much. Its bad enough having my new Triumph Tiger dealer also being my local BMW dealer (seperate showroom, same town). One of the sales guys from BMW was helping out for a day in the Triumph shop on the very day I ordered my new bike. He shouted across the shop "high Ron, selling the BM then" I actually felt a embarassed and guilty. How daft is that? Guess it proves my brand loyalty is still there, deep down.

So, I suspect you're right and I will be back. Just taking a short sabatical to get the Adventure bike thing out of my system. Seriously regret having to sell the R12 but, unfortunately, I 'm not as rich as some of you guys in the States with 3 or 4 bikes in the garage plus my garage is, well , similarly modest.

You'll be pleased to know that the new owner of my bike has been following this forum and has found your pearls of wisdom of particular interest, Don. I think it helped him decide on the R1200R so thanks for that. Hope he joins in the banter here, he sounds a nice guy, and I 'm sure he would benefit from the camaraderie, as I have done.

As I mentioned above, I 'll stay connected to the forum and pop in once in a while,..... even if its just to organise another calendar .
