Horn replacement

2004 r1150r. Got a new motronic unit I'm about to install myelf. How about replacing the horn? Anyone know where i can find one or how to replace it once I do?

I've read a number of posts about much louder horns which might be something
to consider - I know I am.

I don't have any links "at my fingertips" other than this one - maybe someone else
who has done that can provide a good link for a louder horn that fits in the assigned space.

I remember some of them require a relay cuz they take a lot more voltage.

Well known replacements are either the Fiamm freeway blasters (if you take only the low horn you can just bolt-on without any changes) or the Stebel Nautilus.

I saw an article online where a guy installed the Stebel on an 1150R. I have also heard that the ABS unit, if installed, is in the place where a Stebel would go. I have spoken to two local dealers about installing a Stebel. One tried to talk me out of it and the other said they were willing to try. Neither instilled much confidence in me. I really want a louder horn. I had dual Fiamms on my previous bike and they were wonderful. I believe the Stebel comes with its own relay, and, I also believe that the BMW horn already has a relay in the circuit.

I put the stebel nautilus compact where the OEM horn had been. Needed to create a bracket - used a bit of angle bracket from the hardware superstore - to hold it as it, is a fair bit bigger than the OEM horn. Only need to ensure the bells are pointing down, so they don't catch water. Upgrading the el-cheapo relay that comes in the box is also a good idea.

Thanks for the pictures. What model / year is your bike? I am concerned about the possibility of impacting the horn when the suspension compresses. (I'm a big guy.)

i replaced my horn back in 2003 on my 02 1150r. I put on a fiamm horn - i think it was the lower of the two horns that are used on 1150RT. noextra wiring required. its a master blaster. You do need to take some trouble not to foul the suspension at full travel, but particularly to be aware of the horn contacting the main brake hose during its travel - might need to add protection to the brake line as i did.

I fitted a Stiebel and yes, I covered the brake hoses with a bit of rubber sleeving as contact is made on lock . Loud enough to scare the MOT tester if I do not warn them.

I just used a horn from the auto parts store as a replacement. Think it was a Fiamm.

Here is my replacement of the stock horn with a stebel nautilus and the custom bracket you need to make: First remove the stock horn and small squarish piece of metal leaving just the bolt in the frame pointing downward. Then get a 6-1/2 " long x 1" wide x 1/8" thick piece of aluminum (ACE hardware); drill a hole 3/4" in from both ends (big enough to fit over the stock horn mounting bolt and stebel mounting bolt). Now using a vise, bend the aluminum bar at 2" in from "one" end to a 90 degree angle. Here is the tricky part, the mounting point on the horn is not centered : in order to get the horn centered between the forks you have to put the 2" bent part back in the vise with the rest of the bar (4-1/2") parallel to the floor, now while facing the vise, force the 4-1/2" end of the bar to your left ~3/4" keeping it "parallel to the floor", the bar will buckle at the 90 degree bend (the 90 degree bend will no longer be square). Now you will have to mount the horn to the inside of aluminum bar (via the hole 3/4" in from the "bent" end) and then mount the horn/bar assembly to the original horn mounting bolt and see how well centered the horn is between the forks. If not centered, disassemble and bend a little more to the left or right as needed. It "just" fits between the forks and avoids the front brake line when done right. After tightening the old horn nut really hard (bar will deform to mate to the surface) you may need to force the horn/bracket upwards to get it to be within 15 degrees perpendicular to the floor (instructions clarify this with a diagram). The above bracket allows the two horns to be mounted facing forward (the next poster/picture has the horn mounted sideways).

And I used the plug-n-play wiring kit to hook it up to the battery, made the job easier got both from (http://www.bikerhiway.com/stebel-nautil ... p-869.html).

I used everything that came with the horn and used two wire from original horn to operate it.

You have to do some fabrication/bending/drilling holes and some nuts and bolts.

OK, it looks as though all, but one, questions have been answered. That question in in regard to bikes equipped with ABS. Has anyone installed a Stebel on an 1150R with ABS?

My bike has ABS, NO PROBLEM. I installed this horn over two years ago. Blown bad drivers off the road!!

I took a horn off an older VW Golf or Jetta and used the Beaver Electronic horn relay wires. It mounted exactly where the original horn was, even used the original brackets. Sounds like a diesel horn extremly loud and cost almost nothing at all.
