Never purchased a new BMW before, but considering one now, how are the BMW dealers in general in terms of negotiating a price, in the past with other brands like Kawi i was able to get $500-$1000 off MSRP.

any words of wisdom here.

My experience has been it really depends on the model you're buying.

Looking to buy a new model like the DOHC 1200R, or the F800R, you probably won't get much love.
Buying a still new, but last years model for example, you have more negotiating power.

I got a great deal on my R1150R since it was the last model year and they were trying to clear them out. I paid MSRP for my 1200R because it was just released and harder to get in 07'... got $500 off the 800GS in 09', and paid MSPR for the F800 R this year.... new, hot model, pay MSRP is what I've personally seen.

You can go on BMW's website and see what models they are offering incentives on, those are the bikes more likely to be discounted.

Of course it varies dealer to dealer too since they are all independent... (except for the one in Manhattan, right?..)

I'm on the Left Coast and that's one dealer I haven't been to, I'm sure others can chime in. I just remember it being the only company store ( I think).

BMW of Manhattan is basically a car store, with a few bikes tossed in (more like the euro model of BMW dealerships).. it's owned by BMW (not sure if it's NA or AG), and opinions of people I trust would make me hesitant to buy a bike from them, or think of using them for service.

I speak well of MAXBMW here in CT - formerly Cliff's BMW.

I would not expect them to move much on the sticker price of a current model. Good prices on used bikes and they pull inventory for three MAX stores dedicated to BMW motorcycles, service and heritage restoration. Worth a drive just to look around.

Make a sales appointment for your drive up from LI and get some dedicated time - they are a busy store. My guy is Dave Hartley and they respond well to emails to all departments.

I took a "new" 2009 R1200R for a test ride last November. I loved it. Even though it was two model years old the dealership would not budge at all. I thanked them for the ride and went out and found a "like new" 2007 for what I thought was a good deal. It is my third BMW and I would have bought the 2009 had they thrown me a bone. I hate buying new cars and bikes. I normally feel like I have been taken. Good luck with your purchase.

the only reason i am thinking brand new is because of the big change in the engine, otherwise i would most likely be looking at 1-2 year old bike

I live in the Chicago area. We have two dealers in the area. Chicago BMW and Cyclewerks in Barrington.

I purchased my 2009 R in the summer of 09 and paid approx. 10 percent off the MSRP. BMW also had an incentive and have free side cases.

Both dealers are great and i highly recommend them.

Same thing here ... was looking at a 2009 (in 2010) and the dealer would not budge ... it made my decision that much easier. With the money I saved purchasing a 2007, I was able to purchase ALOT of farkles and gear. The 2007 rides every bit as good as the 2009 and REALLY LOVE IT! Right now, there is about 6-8" of snow on it in the driveway.

Bob Honz in St Louis took good care of me last April. 09 leftover out the door for $11500.00 I was very happy. BMW does have incentives on certain models from time to time. Shop around, mine was a base model and alot of the dealers I have visited did'nt have any base models??

I paid $8300 for an 07 with 6k miles. It had all service bulletins done, the 6k service and new tires. It was at a dealer, on consignment. As someone noted above, that gives a lot of room to customize it to suit me. An extra horsepower or two and symetrical gauges wouldn't convince me to spend $6-7k more.

My dealer....Pandora's of Chattanooga Tn...gave me the BMW advertised sticker price. And, since they didn't have a black one as I wanted, they proffessionally painted it black fo me at no charge. Also, I got all extra BMW gear I wanted at half price; luggage for the cases, a top case and mounting rack, and cyinder head gaurds. Free installation on those items as well.

I suspect that I got a good deal because 1) Pandora's is owned and operated by motorcycle people; they're just good folks and 2) they knew a new twin cam model was coming.

I'd search out a dealership thats owned by motorcycle people and one in which you can confirm has happy customers. I drive 100 miles to get to Pandora's in Chattanooga. Whats a 100 miles to someone who bought the bike to ride it.

just an interesting observation, all dealers seem to use the same software for inventory and click to email for a quote, and none of them actually monitor it, as i have requested quotes from like 5 dealers and not 1 has contacted me, in today's age of technology that pretty lame.
I guess i have to stop being lazy and pick the phone to call them lol

Maybe business is SO good, that they just don't have time to provide appropriate Customer Service. Just a guess here.

LOL yes it must be very good, BMW dealers are not affected by recession

I got $800 off sticker when I bought my '09 in April 2010 with little prompting. Didn't bother asking for a discount on my 2011. It was the first one to reach the shop and it was just out of the box so I didn't think the shop would be inclined to discount it.

another observation from looking around for about 2 weeks now, there is almost no used 1200R around i see maybe 2-3 in like 500 mile radius, few years back i remember a lot more were for sale, probably due to economy
