hello all,
i'm making my mind on a r12r but I would consider to get the look more personal.
I love the metallic net I can see on the GS and I was wondering if anyone know if it is available for the R12r as well.
I want to change the rear mirrors also, maybe with a Rizoma ones.
Why I can see nonody changing these?
I'm new to bmw motorbike and it seems that everyone moves on original bmw parts only.

thanks for advicing.

You'll find that most things have been gone over in the past. Use the search function on 'mirrors' and you'll find posts about what the people are using for mirrors. Most guys are hesitant about engaging in something that has been hashed over in the past.

I too would like the metal mesh over the headlight but I really want a different headlight. I would love to put the light from the F800R or K1300R on my R1200R with the asymetrical bikini fairing. AC Schnitzer has a kit to do just that but at $1,200 it's not happening anytime soon.

I put a set of Rizoma Class Retro bar end mirrors on my bike a couple of weeks ago. I'll post a picture. They are amazingly steady. There's no more vibration in the view to the rear than the view to the front. I ordered Rizoma bar ends to mount them on since they won't fit the OEM R1200R bar ends. I don't recommend that as the Rizoma bar ends are not a simple fit to the R1200R and they are tiny compared to the BMW bar ends. What I did at the suggestion of more than one person on this board was take the stock bar ends to a machine shop and have inner portion turned down on a lathe to a diameter that will accomidate the mirror brackets. That worked well and cost $25 which was about half the cost of the Rizoma bar ends.

I need to return the modified bar ends to the machine shop though because I put a lock washer between the bar ends and the handlebars and now there is a gap between the grips and the inner portion of the bar end and mirror bracket. There is supposed to be a gap but it is 3 to 4 mm larger than I would like.

Next up for me is replacing the license plate bracket with the one offered by Wunderlich. (It's in the Euro catalog but WunderlichAmerica doesn't carry it. They will order it from Germany for you, however, and you will have it in about three weeks.) I did that on my 2009 R1200R but I never did get it right. The problem is that the bracket is made for the European market where the license plates are a different size. I never got around to getting a US-sized license plate frame versus a European sized frame or taking a Dremel to the frame to cut it down to US size. The other problem with that swap is the license plate light. On the US bikes there is a separate license plate light. On the Euro bikes the license plate light is integrated into the tail light. I plan to get a Rizoma license plate light that is sold with their license plate brackets and install it with the Wunderlich license plate bracket. That will solve that problem. The license plate bracket swap is a pain because it seems that every part on the rear of the bike attaches to the license plate frame. Also, getting it installed requires a few tricks that are not immediately apparent and took me a few hours to figure out. It will be easier the second time and I'll provide photos and instructions.

While the back end of the bike is apart, I also plan to swap out the OEM incandescent blinkers for Rizoma LED blinkers.

The odds of the bike running at all after I undertake all those projects are pretty slim but I can always hope.

Not what you requested, but this headlight cover from AeroFlow does the job. I have had one since mile 1.

You know BMW makes LED turn signals? They run about $55 each and are plug-and-play on ’09s and later. I mention it because you'll likely get a LAMP error on the multifunction display with the Rizoma signals. Because LEDs use so little power, the bike's ZFE thinks your "incandescent" is burned out. For some cosmic reason, this doesn't happen with BMW LED turn signals. The LAMP error does happen, however, with BMW LED tail lights. Cost me $75 to clear it.

Good tip on the lexan headlight cover. I was not aware of that. I guess I'm more interested in the look of the wire mesh than actually protecting the headlight.

I have been considering the BMW LED turn signals as well for two reasons. First, I don't think the Rizomas are going to be easy to bolt onto the bike. I'll have to get the stock signals off to be sure but I think it's going to require more than what Rizoma provides. That will mean a trip to my new best friend at the machine shop.

Also, I realize that I am risking the wrath of the can-bus system and an error light by changing anything electrical. Rizoma parts are just so great though and in the case of the turn signals they are cheaper than the aftermarket BMW doo-dads.

I'm still debating whether to go with the Kellerman micro-Rhombus indicators. The rears have integrated tail-lights and brake lights in addition to the turn indicators. The fronts have integrated running lights in addition to the turn indicators. I doubt I would ever get all the faults in the can-bus system cleared after installing those but the thought of having the extra lights without adding more light fixtures is very appealing.

The F800GS mirrors (and the identical Aprilia Tuono mirrors) fit the R1200R nicely, and change the look for the better (IMO). The Rizoma ones are nice as well.

Well, might as well shut down the forum, then. If nearly everything's been talked about, and nobody wants to engage, then I guess there's no more point in keeping the site up.

Thanks, but I was more on the estetic side. I love the look of the grill, not that I'm worried about the debries.

Interesting, so I should go for the led turn signals by BMW and replace only the mirrors.
As for the led tail, is that an original bmw accessory?

Yes. Check out this topic.

Jess - It seems you missed the point or just want to be confrontational. I'm just stating the obvious. This question has been up over ten days with very little information about the many mirrors that are being used on this bike. A simple search results in over thirty (30) pages of information on R1200R mirrors, along with pictures, part numbers, where to buy them and often the price.

I again would suggest that Davide use the search feature to find information about mirrors that would fit his R1200R (if he ever actually purchases a R1200R).

Not trying to be confrontational, just pointing out something that's obvious to me, even if the point is missed by hundreds or thousands or even millions of forum denizens: the lifeblood of a forum is conversation. Without it, forums die. If the answer to everything is "Do a search", with the implied assumption that there is nothing new under the sun and nothing ever changes, then the continued operation of a forum would be unnecessary: just archive it and let everyone do a search.

If instead one believes (as I do) that new members bring new perspective, time brings new products, experimentation brings new solutions, then the phrase "Do a search!" would be outlawed.

Just my pet peeve, as I run a very large forum and know what makes forums tick. There are many things in keeping a forum alive that are negotiable. New members, posts, and perspectives are not among of the negotiable items.

I've been using the Rizoma class retro bar end mirrors for about a year now and they've been great. Almost 100% vibration free and clear. They look great too.

Can't help with respect to the headlight grille.

I'm a member on Jess' forum and I'd agree wholeheartedly. Instead of saying "do a search" we could say "look here" - althouth only the main url comes up for me so I've not been able to do that (And I should look in the FAQs before I aske someone to help me). Sure works on that forum.

I don't mind re-hashing a bit - even though sometimes I do think a new member would be better to go and find an old thread if they can. Sometimes the old threads are hord to find: lord knows, I have enough hassle with the search function! Sometimes, I find my view has changed or I've had some new experience to add when re-hashing.

So on this topic, my 2 cents is that the clear protectors are simle and work well - I have the Australian one coz, well, I'm an Aussie and it was on the market a few years befroe the US ones (so the only one then available). Works very well and mostly I can just forget it's there. Judging by the stone hits on my screen, it's doing its job!

... but it isn't the "look" of the wire one ... Haven't seen those out here in Aussie stone-chip country in a couple of decades, now that most riders use the clear ones.
