I recently had a scary episode when i pulled over at a friends house and popped down the side stand while still in gear and engine cut out as it should .Having returned to the bike sometime later i put keys in and while stood at side of bike pushed starter switch forgetting it was still in gear and dirtied my undies as the bike lurched forward. Is this normal that starter will fire while in gear with stand down or is there something deffective (apart from me !)

The kill switch on your side-stand would normally not allow an ignition while the bike is on your side-stand. So that piece may have gone south?

Presumably the kill switch cut the engine when i pulled up and put down the stand so is working therefore why does it allow power to the starter ?
however i presume this is not normal so something is adrift somewhere

R1150R starter relay circuit:

Power from battery (+) to IGN switch, RH switch module (kill switch and start button), to relay's coil feed.

The starter relay's coil grounds to BOTH neutral switch on transmission, and to clutch switch located within hand lever assembly.

If bike is in gear, and clutch lever is not pulled, then starter relay coil should NOT energize. If your bike's starter spun up without transmission in Neutral or clutch lever pulled in, then one or both of the switches is problem.

Sidestand only effects ignition circuit via coil power supply.
