r1150r oil change questions

Hi,
I have a 2004 R1150R. I went to the dealership and after blowing some brain cells when told the price of an oil change (at least $170 in Toronto) I decided to do my own... I do my cars so what the heck. I used to take it to a local bike shop where I used to live and they charged around $50. Anyway, the BMW guy was semi understandably a dingle and wouldn't give me any specs on oil filter size or even the size for the crush washer. So hopefully someone has this information or even a link to some place with the info or any other info. But the specs are important.

I am expecting I can go to a local supply store to get the filter and crush washer. Good assumption? yes/no? Will a Nappa auto parts have them? What's your experience?

Beemerboneyard.com has all of the oil, washers, filters, and anything else you could possibly need to do an oil change. That's ridiculous that a BMW dealership/shop wouldn't provide you with that info, they were probably thinking to themselves that it's easily available to find yourself online so why should they waste their time helping you, but still...there is no need for that.

I have not had that kind of problem going to the service side of either of the BMW dealerships in the Seattle area. It might be more sensitive to go tho the parts folks for the filter and washer rather than service and parts would have all the relevant numbers and parts, of course. Generally though there has been a long tradition of dealership support of owner mechanics. I'd be indignant if I found it otherwise when I really needed advice from the service side. I have found that I had to wait for the go-to-guy to finish something before I could interrupt him though. Reasonable.

Changing the oil on an oilhead is incredibly easy to do. Take it out for a good warm up run, bring it back home, set it on centerstand. Set a good drain pan underneath, remove drainplug, get oil on hands, unscrew filter, get more oil on hands, go wash hands and eat a leisurely lunch. Come back and reinstall drainplug (sometimes I change washer sometimes not--I've never had drainplug leak in 80,000 miles of doing my changes). Check old filter to make sure old rubber gasket came off with filter, take a rag and wipe out filter cavity and sealing surfaces. Fill new filter 2/3 full with Castrol 20/50--10/40 if it's wintertime) btw..I've been running an AC Delco PF53 oil filter in my R (s) since 2003. Tighten up hand tight plus a tad more, slowly fill crankcase with 3.5 to 3.75 qts of oil. Start motor and let it idle for a minute or so--not long--they heat up quick w/no airflow over jugs. Check for leaks. If it's leaking then fix the leak. If not take it out for a nice ride. Come back home, set it on center stand (same location) go have a beer and dinner. Come back and check oil level in sight glass. What you want is level somewhere around the middle--no higher than the top of the red circle! If it's low add a few ounces at a time---no more! There is a secret procedure to all this oil checking procedure--involves phases of the moon, time of the day, low or high tide, 2 cycle, 4 cycle and menstrual cycle. If you can handle the last part then you got us all beat.


One last thing.............no oil change/service is complete untl you have checked the antifreeze in the radiators on either side of the fuel tank. This is of critical importance.

What these other guys forgot to tell you, is you can't use anything but BMW oil. Otherwise you void your warranty.

I'm in with the other guys. Oil changes are bog easy, I did my first one on my bike last week and it was very simple. I did have a little difficulty getting the old BMW filter off as I didn't have the right tool but I used a K&N screw on replacement.

As an aside has anyone here used the FLO reusable stainless steel oil filters? They are a bit expensive initially but filters in Oz aren't as cheap as the US and they would work out after only 4 changes.
