Want to fit some handguards to my R1200R,anybody fitted the Wunderlich handguards and if so what is the opinion of them.

Does not seem to be much in the way of handguards for the R1200R.

Where is your spirit of adventure? There are some detailed tutorials on here to fit BMW GS handguards to an R1200R. Only you can decide if it is really worth it to purchase one of the several aftermarket handguards that might be easier to install...

Wow, all that talking yet nothing useful plus you didn't answer Bob's very reasonable and specific question.



I'd like to hear some opinions about these specific hand guards also, I already have GS ones and don't like them all that much anymore.

I did drop the cash and installed them on my bike. They are a pain to install because you have to remove the mirror and the threaded bolt that they provided for some reason did not thread in properly. I really don't understand that, I even went to purchase new bolts and it was the same thing. I guess BMW is also in the fastner business.
Anyway, I wanted something that I could take off when its nice, so I only use these in the dead of winter and I can now comfortably ride into the 30's with my heated vest and such. Over all I do like them, but it is not nice to the lines of the bike as none of them will be. But its about comfort most of all and looks second.

I have them installed on my bike and they do the job. I have a throttlemeister installed as well, so the GS type hand guards would not work. I lost my winter gloves about last November and have been using my Summer gloves until now. They do a good job of blocking oncoming cold air, but are open enough to allow unimpeded movement of my hands on/off the grips. IIRC, the installation was as mentioned, a PITA, as the bolts/fasteners were messed up .. so mine are held on by my mirror posts which seem to do the trick (don't loosen up at all ... and have ridden with this configuration now almost 5K miles). Net/net, I like 'em.

I also have them! Fitted with absolutely no problems, taking about 30 mins max.. Same guards fit '11 and earlier R's.

When I got my new R last year I rode without for a while and realised how effective the guards are. Hands were much colder! Give some rain protection but still need waterproof gloves.

If you can live with the way the look, get them.

Thanks for all your replies,I have decided to go for the Barkbusters Storm S1 which fit the R1200R,they look better and are over £30 cheaper.should get them within the next few days.

I will post some info on them.

Please do, I have my eye on them as-well and would love to see how they fit.

I have the Barkbusters on my bike. They aren't beautiful, but if you take the decals off they're not too bad. I've actually been considering switching to the Wunderlich clear guards because I think they kind of disappear if you're not looking real closely.

The Wunderlich page says they only fit up to 2010, but there's at least one guy on here with 'em on a 2011.

I ordered the Barkbusters yesterday at 11a.m...received them today before lunch,hows that for service!!!

Straightforward to fit only took me 30 mins,might have to adjust them for best position.On account of the awful weather on North-East England have not been for a test ride yet.

They don't loook to bad on the bike either very pleased with them.

I see you've already got Barkbusters. so this is a bit late ...

I got and installed the Wunderlich clear guards.
A one-minute job all up, because all the fasteners worked and all the holes lined up perfectly.
very easy compared to adapting the GS guards (and I didn't like the look)

They do a great job - almost too good. My winter gloves almost never get used now.
I even considered taking them off over summer (I'm in the southern hemisphere).
I really like the open ends - no loss of protective function on a road bike, and much easier in use.

Aesthetically, these made the difference for me. Clear = disappear (gotta keep 'em clean, though!)
I considered the various black or grey ones and always kept putting them off.
I also have the clear leg and foot shields - so a 'naked' bike with all clear screen, hand, leg/foot protection.
I call it the emperor's new fairing ....

I had them on my '11 - they fit fine.

They didn't fit my 2011 R1200R (the brake/clutch assembly is different from the 2010 and the bracket holes didn't line up)
Have used similar guards on a K1300R and found them very effective.
