After four years my original battery has finally failed and I am now forced to choose a replacement. I am considering the Odyssey PC535 replacement but what makes these batteries any better than the Excide original battery?

Unless there is an Odyssey salesman on the list I doubt you'll get exactly the answer your looking for.
Many of us have purchased the Odyssey as a personal choice after reading the opinions of others on this list. SEARCH Odyssey and sit back for the evening and read the endless amount of information pro and con about these batterys. If you have even more time to spend, SEARCH just battery. Then you can make an informed choice.

Or you could just buy an Odyssey PC535 (which really doesn't fit - but SEARCH will show you how to get around that) and be done with it.

Um...they're less expensive? They're much less likely to fail unexpectedly? They're really good at remaining charged when unused for significant time?

Other than that, they're just terrible.

I was tempted by the Odyssey or the Shorai but I found an Exide YTX14-BS same spec as the BMW OEM battery for £36. If it fails over the winter I will probably opt for a Shorai but if it lasts 4 years like the original one I would more than pleased.

My Vote goes to Shorai

Ive started to get abs warning. Fault code was low volage. As my 2007 bike has its original battery, i reckoned on a replacement - she was starting to crank a bit slower than usual too.

Bought a Varta YTX14-BS for £60 a week ago. Thought it would be ok.
The shop filled it and charged it.
I brought it home, and left it on the optimate charger for a few days until tonight.
( this is my usual charger - never had a problem with it before, my bike is always connected to it.)
Put it on the bike, and it barely starts the bike at all...
the bike lazily cranked over until the first compression, then the electronics cut out.
I tried a few more times, and it eventually started.
Took it for a 30 min ride, to see if it would sort itself out.
No chance.

Grrrrrr.

Have put the old battery back on, and it started fine.

But abs light still on dammit...

So - battery goes back to shop in the morning.

Failing the £36 exide, i will go for an odyessey i think - i retrospect i should have gotmone first as last. Had one on my gs - it sorted out the abs warnings no problem.
Wheres the best deal for an odyessey?

Looks like theirs another player in the game other than Shorai. It's Ballistic, price seems about the same as Shorai. Here's a link: http://www.ballisticparts.com/. Looks like they recomend the 12 cell for R1200Rs (R1200R content)

Just want to add a few lines here, I sell Varta Batteries, wow you paid some for that YTX14-BS, Look here

Anyway more to the point, this Varta YTX14-BS seems to have a low CCA of just 100, whilst other manufacturers recommended batteries for the R1200R show a much higher output. I am currently getting Varta to look into this to see if this is either a misprint, a wrongly spec'd battery, or a differently measured CCA value . So far they have suggested the latter, but I am not so sure. I shall keep you updated.
