New (to me) R1100R

Just picked her up. '99 with 12000 miles and super clean. Older gentleman who polished her with a diaper. Rode home and had a blast. Just curious about one thing. Upon hard acceleration from say 3rd gear up, I noticed the faint and brief sound of what sounded like tiny pebbles in a can. The exhaust is a Ztechnik and it sounds like (although not at all sure) that it was coming from there. Any thoughts?
Love the bike!

I get that, too, on my 2004 R1150R, and it always seemed to be like it was a knocking/very slight lugging because it doesn't happen in hard acceleration with the revs past 4,500, for example.
But that's only the impression of a guy with very little mechanical knowledge.

I haven't got that noise on my R1100R but I think your guess is right in thinking it is your exhaust that is creating the noise. I have the standard exhaust still fitted.
Do you have no noise when starting up your bike? Mine had a camchain noise which is caused by the left camchantensioner. I had mine renewed.

It doesn't happen when I start the bike. Only when I give it a hard acceleration like if I have to make a quick pass around a car. Just wondering if anyone has ever heard it on their bike before.

Sounds to me like the "marbles in a can" noise that you are hearing is Gear Lash. Perhaps change the fluid in the transmission. I get that noise in my 95 M3 Transmission when i go hard on the gas in a certain RPM range. Put thicker gear oil in and it made it nice and quiet.
Not sure if this is what you are experiencing but could be the same thing

Hi - just got my 96 plt R1100R - she is mint, 19k miles , and rides well.
didnt go into 1st gear last ride - kepk kicking down - but took 7 or 8 tries?
also noticed the occasional jerk - when accellerating in higher gears - scared me a bit - thought transmission problem - but bmw rider at work said this is common with big shaft drive bmws.
dyu think clutch needs adjusting to find 1st gear easier?

did you try rocking the bike or just start to let the clutch out , one or the other always works for me on this bike or any other. Enjoy your new rides and welcome to both of you. Mike

Usually get the same issue trying to get first when stopped at a light after a long run in higher gears. Preloading on the downshift (same as on the up) helps prevent it though.

The gearboxes of the pre-facelift models were known to fail in greater numbers ... Maybe that is what is announcing itself here?
