I want to buy a fairing and only have the flyscreen right now. Anyone have a view on the best fairing for wind of the chest? BM touring looks quite nice in smoked but have heard wind protection is pants. Loads more 1150Rs in the US - so wondered if you US bikers could give a Brit a tip on this?!? Thanks and good biking.....

no-fairing is a good fairing, if you ask me.
are you looking for total wind protection, good looks, partial protection, etc.??? And by fairing, do you mean a windscreen?

Try 'bikescreens.com' out of New Zealand. I've been running one of their screens for 20,000 km now and it's great. Also uses the stock fly mounts.
There are a couple of tricks to getting it to work right (spacers).

At $119, National Cycles, Street Screen EX, with some mods to the mounting bracket - sweetest airflow I have experienced off a 50R. Take it off in 10 seconds. For that price, I can replace it several times to the others if need be. Also, they dont through mount the screen so you are not likely to get stress cracks.
As most of my riding is open country and distance, this 17" screen is just what I need. Set it so that the bugs hit my helmet about 1" above the visor. (I am 5,8 sitting on a BM)

There are a lot of opinions on this topic. For example:

Also, Dallara has that new tall BMW screen and he really likes it.
The problem is that everyone's opinion is based on their own purchase decision, size and riding position. It is really difficult to objectively compare these screens.

the BMW RT has the best fairing for the BMW 1150. The best one for the R1150R is the flyscreen (or NO fairing). If you want to put a barn door on it, check

If you want to make your roadster look like some old man's slow, boring, and unstylistic bike, get one of those oversized pieces of plastic like the cee baileys or parabellum. It you want a screen that will match the lines of the roadster well, get a givi A750 and get it custom painted to match your bike. The givi will keep the wind off your chest just fine. I've ridden with one for the last 9000+ miles. I see no need for anything larger.

I think these style/comfort issues are very individual, and we should all feel free to do exactly what we like. We all have our own tastes and preferences. I have found touring to be much more comfortable with a larger screen or fairing, maybe because of my neck problems. I also like the look of a relatively small fairing on this bike, so I checked into some of the options.
Wunderlich makes a low fairing/screen combo that I personally think looks sharp. It ends up being about the same height as the BMW sport screen. It was too low for me, though, so I got a Parabellum Scout fairing. The screens for the Scout come in various heights so there is no need to approach "barn door" territory unless you're sure that's what you want. Once the Scout is installed I will post pix.

Thanks everyone for the replies to this question. All very individual. Don't really want to spoil the lines of the Roadster (so have flyscreen already) but fancy a bit more protection for longer touring (this year in mainland Europe hopefully). I will look at all your suggestions. By the way - I suppose the term "Barn Door" means "large"? I love US speak - in the same way most Americans are attracted to English Quaint-Speak. Biking - thankfully - is one language fits all!

I've tried the BMW sport and touring screen, and have decided that the touring screen is on to stay. Gets rid of the blast on the chest and much less turbulance than the sport screen. Screens are so personal, though. It depends not just on your size, but your inseam, torso, angle you sit, etc... You almost have to roll the dice and see how something works.
