A strangely pleasant ride in the night

I rode 496 miles last night from my home in Blacksburg, VA to the Courtyard Marriott hotel at Newark Airport in Newark, NJ. The forecast called for intermittent rain throughout the evening in the Northeast, but I didn't care. I had been droning along for so long in cages this summer on the interstate that I HAD to get on two wheels.

My luck held the entire night as there was a hint of rain in a few places but never a full blown downpour. Instead of rain, there was mist in valleys I rode through in central PA. With the pavement slightly wet in some places and moisture rising from it, there were moments when my Roadster seemed to just glide and dance. Midnight came and went as I continued hurtling through the damp cloudy air. The state of New Jersey felt almost metaphysical - the only time I will ever describe this state as such! Looking down, the boxer's jugs hovering over the ground reassured me that all was well with the world. The thrum coming from them was like a lullaby for me to recall as I fell asleep late in the evening.

Yong, I hope you didn't fall asleep while riding.

Sounds like a nice ride. I would have been way too sleepy to do a midnight ride like that.

I have had a few trips where a long semi-solitary run on the super-slab in the wee hours took on some mystical feel. Or perhaps I was so tired it was hallucinations! At any rate, I know exactly how you feel!

Years ago, while going down I-81 on my R100RS, eating up miles to get home after a ride to New England, I saw the rear light of a motorcycle in front of me about midnight or so. I reeled him in slowly and it was a Moto Guzzi Lamans. We exchanged silent waves in the dim glow of the headlights and he fell in behind me. For the next couple of hours, he followed me in sycronized motions, passing and weaving though traffic with me in that surreal late night dance on the interstate. When I signaled to exit for gas and coffee, he followed and we shared a cup of coffee and some pleasant coversation, then parted, never to cross paths again. It is still one of my favorite ride memories.

Years back ... on a R100RS, at night, the other bike was a new VF750, same thing. We shared watching the LEO pursuit vehicle pass us (we were on 110Kph, but had been >160) then do a four wheel slide on the highway about 500 metres in front of us to pull us up!!! :x
I lost my license over that one! :(
