Hi, I have just bought a Tom Tom Urban rider,it does not have the active mount.
If I was to buy the active mount which is the best way to wire it up.I believe there is a connector in front of the tank which you can use.
There is a connector you can buy from Nippy Normans which you can plug in,but how would that fit into the active mount(there is no connector on the other end just 3 wires which you only use 2)
Would you have to join the wire which comes with the active mount to the part from Nippy Normans?

The R1200R GPS plug is in the same place as the BMW GS bike to the side of the headlight. Here is a link to a comprehensive explanation, and you can find lots more info on this board using the search feature.

The active mount from TomTom comes with a cable (plug for the active mount on one side and open end on the other side) and with that you have 2 choices. a) you cut off the BMW plug and connect to your tomtom cable. b) you buy yourself the connector from BMW (or elsewhere) and connect the open wires to those of the tomtom cable.

However please beware that the 12-Models have a canbus and the TomTom active mount is known not to shut off to drain your battery empty. This is due to the Central Electric and the TomTom mount. The tomtom mount has a built in current converter which constantly drains power. The central electric detects that and does not shut off/fall asleep when you switch off your bike. And thus drains your batt.

There are 3 solutions:
a) you use a relay
b) you use a switch or
c) (what I have done on my 12S) you splice in a simple white LED and a resistor (560 Ohm). That will help the canbus to shut off (and you can see the same when the LED switches off).

The gps plug on the R1200R's are switched. The power turns off after 3 minutes. You can also tap into another switched power source if you don't want to mess with the $14 gps repair plug wire from BMW.

It appears there are mini-usb hardwire kits available that are compatible with the Tomtom. I even read about someone that used a cable from Garmin. You can splice that to the gps repair plug wire on tap into another source.

its correct that the BMW plug is switched. Same will work with a Garmin for example. But won't work with the TomTom active mount ... Trust me. The tomtom mount prevents the canbus to fall asleep and as a consequence will drain your batt.

I have bought the gps cable..does it have live and neutral marked on the wires dont want to wire it the wrong way round
Re the active mount draining the battery,can you remove the tom tom cable that goes into the dock
Thus remove he mount from the bike

I think there are teeny tiny color markings on the yellow BMW gps repair plug wire that tell you what each one is for.

(1) Brown = ground (-ve earth)
(2) Blue/Green = Speed Pulse (not required)
(3) Red/White = 12V (+ve power)

Off course you can always remove the plug from your tomtom mount but this is kinda not so easy as it sits quite tight ... Your choice.

I am having problems wiring the gps plug.
There are 3 wires marked 1 earth 2 not used 3 ignition switch.

I have wired 1(earth) to the black tom tom lead and 3 (ignition ) to the red tom tom lead.
however when i turn the ignition on the tom tom does not fire up.

I have wired the tom tom lead to the aux socket on the frame and when i turn the ignition the tom tom fires up.

Sometimes the CANBUS doesn't like it when an accessory is already turned on when you fire up the ignition. Try powering up the Tomtom after you start the motorcycle.

Do you refer to this plug on your BMW?



At least that is the one found on my R1200S and a multitude of other BMW models. If yes, pin 1 = -, Pin 2 = signal wire (of no use for TomTom or Garmin or other aftermarket devices), Pin 3 = +

The plug you would need to connect your TomTom is this



We call it cartool plug (because its made by a German company called Cartool.

Now all you need to do is connect the + wire of your tomtom cable to the cartool cable at Pin 3 and the - wire to the cartool cable at pin 1. At least thats what I had done (plus I had spliced in a simple LED and a resistor as said earlier).

Now whenever I attach my tomtom to the mount (bike switched off) and switch on the bike my TomTom would automatically switch on. And whenever I switch off my bike the TomTom would go off after some 20 seconds or so. All works well. Should work for you as well ... If not you may have a problem with the TomTom plug (its fairly easy to insert the TomTom plug in the wrong direction!) or some other problem. Splicing in a LED has the advantage of seeing when the cable is hot or when its off.

Yes i have got the right part..i have wired the red (live?) tom tom lead to the number 3 yellow wire and the black wire on the tom tom lead to the number 1 yellow lead is that correct.
Not sure if my plug is the same as photo looks a bit different.

Its the only one i can see.

Success,I was using the wrong plug.Thanks for your great photos Oliver,i realised i was using the wrong plug.After looking again i found the right plug.
Dunno what the other one is for.
Only thing is when i switch the ignition on the tom tom turns on fine,but when i turn the ignition off it does not shutdown.I have waited 10 minutes with the ignition key out ,but it is still on.

I would like to thank everybody for all the great advice.Once again the forum has come up with the gooda

Bob, please read my previous posts. Your TomTom active mount will not shut down when you switch off your bike. And consequently will drain your battery until empty!

I gave you the solutions/workaround. No need to repeat myself.
