Dimensions on OEM mirrors

I recently purchased a 2004 Rockster, which did not have the OEM mirrors. I am trying to understand how the OEM units fit and attach to the bike. I am assuming the shaft size going through the mount is M8, I do not understand the groove cut into the shaft near the end. If someone has the dimenions and can explain the mounting procedure I would appreciate it.
