Just got home with my new R1200R, non-ESA.

I had ESA on an F800 and an RT, so I want to see what you all suggest that the damper and pre-load settings should be to mirror the ESA Comfort setting ?

My R has ESA and I would say (I'm 160lbs) what ever they suggest in the owners manual for 1 up, no luggage. In my case I would back that down a bit.
I find the comfort 1 up too stiff for smooth highway cruising. My other BMW's had manual set up, and I could dial that in much better.
How do you like the R so far?

Like it. Love the smooth delivery of power, with no buzz or engine vibration. I would like to soften the ride a bit so my back is not jolted with every bump in the road I go over.

It's not going to be "set X to 2 and Y to 3" sort of thing. Setting up suspension isn't really that simple. Your weight comes into the picture.. things that may seem obvious sometimes aren't, like more preload may equal more comfort and a smoother ride. I'd suggest reading the link above, then if you have some specific questions, feel free to ask them.

It took a couple thousand miles for my suspension to break in. It also took me a couple thousand miles to learn how to adjust the suspension.

For your weight, I would back the preload all the way open. Set to "Bass" or no preload. For smooth highway riding, set the damper screw open 2.5 turns from all the way H.

Try that and let me know if you see the difference. Just don't go driving like a hooligan at this setting. Bike will bounce around.
