Whats the official on removal of the Charcoal canister .Ive heard some nasty rumors that the charcoal can break away and get into the fuel supply..Has anyone had issues with this ? Is it the Spleen of the bike in that it really doesnt provide a purpose that will affect longectivity of operation..

I removed mine. No problem.

It keeps the bike from smelling up the garage with gasoline fumes. Your choice.

Removed mine ten years ago and I've never smelled fuel vapors in my garage.

While i never saw a real reason to remove it, mine eventually got clogged up and created a strong vacuum inside the gas tank- so bad that I had a hard time opening the tank to refuel! This was after about ~80,000 miles. I removed it and the associated plumbing, connecting the vacuum lines to bypass it. Here I am another 50,000 miles later and still no problems. Yes, you may notice a little more gas smell in the garage, but not anything dangerous or more noticeable than what my Suzuki puts out (the Suzuki never came with a charcoal canister...).

FYI- only the bikes imported to USA had the canister, so removing it won't cause any harm.

Removed mine as well with no noticeable fumes. I plugged the ends of the tubing so that may be why.

Here in Oz they don't even come with the canister.. So it can't be that important..

Mine was removed about 20,000 miles ago and no issues.

And since I am posting directly behind the esteemed DJ, I have to add, I joined the muffler removal club also! Liking that also, as well as the full size bag!

I did a cannisterectomy and lowered the muffler, as it should have been from the factory.

Ok I think Ill go ahead and remove..1 last question did you guys plug both hoses and if so what did you use screw, sealant? Does anything actually need to breathe through either of them?

Yes it has to breath and be able to drain CycleRob re-routed my hoses the cannister was taken off by P.O. to install a rear rack but it was plumbed wrong and was keeping a vacuum on the gas tank. Even though he explained it as he was re-routing them I can't remember maybe he will see this post and can guide you. I will tell you that we are going to re-install mine under the gas tank where the abs would be if it had that feature . The paint has been messed up on the F.D. and paralever because of dripping gas. I removed mine using youtube instructional video by chris harris. I used the bracket bolt for the canister clamp to plug the vacuum hose to the tank and re routed the vent drain hose with the other tank and vent hoses. Have not had any issues and the bike looks better.

Removed mine today as we finished up service. Also reamed out the water drain line under the fuel fill cap, what a PIA... also replaced the fluid in the clutch, don't forget to do that one, servo brakes as well.

I removed mine today, and am kicking myself that I did not take a video.

I was having problems opening the fuel tank, and the cannister was my prime suspect.

Cut the line while the tank was at approx 1 gal left, heard the air being sucked back into the tank, and watched it expand.

Why oh why did they put it there in the first place......

We don't have that in Europe.

IMO, the canister system is not the problem. Reversed vent and drain hoses; and leaking vent/drain hoses inside the tank are. When the vent and drain get accidentally reversed you get water in the canister. When either the vent or drain hoses, which run though the tank, start to leak you get gasoline in the canister or on the floor.

A bigger problem is that the in-tank pressure hoses can leak for a long time before you notice it because the pump has 3X the capacity required. Then suddenly they fail. Best to keep an eye on them.
