IICE AIR

Hi,
I am a returning member - now a lifer, too, which is cool. I have had a number of bikes over the past 30 years from a lot of manufacturers; Yamaha, Honda(2), Victory, Suzuki, and now on my 2nd BMW R1150R.
I'd like to make some improvements to it, and am asking for input and advice from the crowd.
This is for a '03 R1150R - the catalytic converter is removed (the CCP too, it looks like). No O2 sensors.
I've read about the IICE AIR and would like to find one, not sure that they make them anymore - I've been to the site and tried to order one (or pre-order) with no luck. I've not taken the bike apart enough to know if it has one or some other booster but it seems to run a little lean. Also, need to just replace all the fluids and plugs just for safety sake.
I'm really interested in hearing suggestions, ideas, notes of experience, anything along the line to getting this baby running top notch again.
Just to clarify, she is running really well, so far. I've only had her a week, but I do commute about 100 miles a day. And there are some little things that need attention - horn has a broken wire, stuff like that.
Anyway, Thanks, and I'm glad to be back on a Beemer!

I remember your screen name. Welcome back.
What you need is an AF-XIED to richen the mixture. Available through Beemer Boneyard and mfr web sites.
I have an IICE Air. Bottom line: the Motec tweaks mixture parameters based on closed-loop operation with lambda sensor. You can trick the Motec using IICE Air or Booster plug (I've got one of those too), but the tuning parameters will eventually be altered, as the oxygen sensor trumps the intake temperature's influence on mapping. I run only the AF-XIED.
There's a good topic thread n ADV that documents the Motec's behavior etc.

That sounds great, and easier/more simple, to manage, compared to an IICE AIR or a Dobeck EFI?
Reading the sight it is plug and play, anything to watch out for or know besides that?
Thanks, again,
Gaston

a question, looking at installs on youtube, they are plugging into O2 sensors with the XiED. I don't believe I have O2 on my bike - I don't see any plugs in my exhaust and know that I have a Y-pipe instead of a catalytic. Does the XiED work without the O2 sensor? I can definitely contact the supplier, just thought I'd ask.

If you have a y-pipe without oxygen sensor, then you're out of luck for AF-XIED.
IIRC, Roger covers the no-sensor case for Motec operation, which is probably a "limp home" contingency map in case the sensor or wiring fails.

Hi Gaston,
If you install the correct coding plug and have an O2 sensor bung welded into the y-pipe at the common meeting point you can get full functionality of the Motronic back. I added a second bung to mine and a local welder TIG-welded it for a nominall fee. (photo below) For me, the second bung allowed me to easily switch between the Innovate LC-1, a stock sensor and the AF-XIED. It also made it easy to test the PowerCommander III and various other fueling add-ons.
By removing the O2 sensor you have put your Motronic into Limp Home Mode. What this does it to widen the fueling spread so that it is sometimes leaner than normal and sometimes richer. The reason it does this is to create an "Oxygen Spread" that keeps the catalytic converter functioning.
Your Motronic will learn the error that the IICE-AIR produces and Adapt around it. I've got a detailed explanation of this in another thread if you're interested.
By comparison, if your bike is well tuned, you will be quite impressed by the improvement that the AF-XIED makes once you install it and an O2 sensor. You can select easily betwee 4% more fuel and 6% more fuel.
Although this is not my product, I am helping Beemerboneyard and Nightrider for a time since I have the lambda-shifting experience with BMW motorcycles. And since it was me that persuaded Nightrider to build it.

Hi Guys,
I think I need to share more info on the bike, as I bought it used, and recently. I have a guy who has a dealer license and he purchases bikes on auction - they are either repo or trade-ins. he doesn't get much info, but he's been riding since he was a kid and raced for a while, so he knows bikes quite well. Meaning, I don't know the history of this bike, I do know the name of the last owner and the shop he traded it in to - Fun Bike Center in SoCal. I will reach out to find out the history of this machine.
It has no Cat, no O2 sensors, I've not taken the tank off to see what if any kind of power management it has in there. It does run very well, certainly not limping, full power and torque up through the revs - that would be past 6k. This weekend I will have time to open it up, as well as change the fluids, just to get it to Zero miles on the changes. The work done on the bike is very good, and the bike is very clean - I'll post some pics at some point.
I know there are folks out there who have removed the Cat and O2 and added some management, and in some sense, as I work through this bike, I expect to find a plug-in.
I'll update the info on the bike after the weekend. After that I think you guys can be much more helpful as a bunch of guess work will be gone.

It will be good to get more specifics. We'll wait to hear more from you. In the meantime, Limp Home Mode doesn't mean bad running. Here is a chart of stock fueling, a tight straight line:
Then fueling without an O2 sensor, more spread. It's not that it is terrible, just not the best it can be.
Then if you combine Closed Loop O2 and an AF-XIED, you can bring the fueling toward Best Power Mixture and get a nice performance bump.

Hi Roger,
those are great. Thanks.
I'll probably start a new thread for this bike. It is great hearing the feedback and info on the questions I have and especially after I really learn how this thing is put together. I did get it pretty cheap, and the manual will be here tomorrow.
I really appreciate everyone's input.
thanks!
