Secret Road Between I-95 and US 17 - Not Really a Ride Repor

Riding into DC I have found several 'secret' roads that allow me to avoid the bulk of the traffic and not sit around waiting. Probably don't save any time, but keep me moving.

This one I'll tell you about skirts the edge of Quantico Marine Base and Prince William Park in Stafford and Prince William Counties.

Take US 17 South from Bealeton for 5 miles. Take Flying Circus Road east for 4 miles. Take Elk Run Road North(East) for 6 miles. Courthouse Road for 1 mile. Then Brent Town Road, Sowego Road to Marine Corps Base Road for 2 miles.

If the Marine Corps Road is open, follow it for 3 miles to Aden Road; if closed, turn onto Fleetwood Road for 2 miles and then Aden Road East for 4 miles. At the 4 way stop sign, turn onto VA SR619- Joplin Road.

That's the one. 9.9 miles with nary a straight section. And these are good twisties: up, down, off camber, tight, signed/unsigned, shady, sunny, left right and around. Watch for, in this order, Prince William County Police patrols, U.S. Marine Police patrols (Federal tickets), other cars cutting the yellow line oncoming, deer, racoons, wet leaves. Run it both ways more than once.

Secret Road
Not any more. If I'm ever up that way, I'll be sure to run that road.

I've been up Joplin road, good road but I seem to always get 'stuck' behind a car.

I wish I lived in a more rural area that had great roads right out the door. Someday I might.
