Sidestand - metal fatigue

Post by jrsndman »

I know I've seen a post about this before, can't find it now though. I bought the side stand pictured below to replace mine because the wear on mine concerned me. Mine is much worse. I know "they all do that" but, there must be a better solution. Anyone have any ideas?

That's not metal fatique. Like you write it yourself, that's the wear on that part from using the sidestand. Plain grease should lessen the wear a lot. It's raw metal on metal while using the sidestand.

jrsndman, The wear is really noticeable, but there are a lot more years of wear left before it wears almost all-the-way-thru. A big plus is that there are 2 springs to prevent the stand from going down on a left turn when other bike's single spring stand would loose its spring. What about the wear on the 4 curved ends of the 2 springs? Replacing the side stand will give you $ticker $hock!
Some may suggest a small weld deposit add-on into the wear point, but the heat might anneal (soften) that iron loop on the side stand.
You could wrap 2 turns of a small rectangular metal piece cut from a food can lid around the worn area . . . a very "labor intensive" job for a small diameter rounded loop that would disperse the load and relocate the wear points.
