Has anyone removed the plastic oil cooler surround? Did it affect the heart?

I assume you mean removing the cover and running the bike. I've not, only removed to clean. I would recommend given the shape to keep in in place, any channeling of air flow into the cooler is bound to be a good thing.
Should you decide to run with out it, please post your results.

I agree with Mr. Newport. I think they spent some time designing the air flow thru the oil cooler. I've read that some people noticed a difference when they removed the plastic scoops (?) on the lower forks.
It amazes me how the cooler doesn't get clogged with stuff when you abuse the bike on a nasty road, I've been thru mud, rocks and stream crossings with no problems. (knocking on wood now). It's stock with just a fender extender for protection.

Owner's book says "Driving without air guide wings can lead to the engine overheating. Only drive with the air guide wings installed. "

"Air guide wings" sounds like the plastic bits on the fork tubes.

Yes, I was adding to what mogu83 said about that.
