Ok, so I'm trying to score some used system cases.

If they are badly scuffed, can those scuffs be cleaned up, short of having the cases painted?

Yes, I know, I should quit already and get new ones from Chicago BMW...

Some have used spray on truck bed liner paint.

I originally bought a 'new' set when I bought the bike new. You know ... I did not want scuffs on the used ones I could find ... I wanted new for the price of used.

Guess what - mine are scufffed now. Kind of adds character - at least that's what I keep telling myself. Have not tried to rub them off - yet.

My advice, if buying used, don't worry about a few scuffs. If they are beat to the pulp, then hold off until you can find a cleaner used set (or new) so you can put your own scuffs on them. And remember, they will get scuffed and if they don't, you need to ride more.

I bought used then put new city case lids on mine. I don't know how to not scuff things up sometimes. Seems like its part of the ownership equation, for me anyway!

When I see high mileage motorcycles with not a scratch on them I'm a little amazed.

As Jeff pointed out, you can paint used lids and make them look as good as new, just not the same as new.

Where would one find used ones? I can't seem to come across any.

It's hopeless to think you'll avoid scuffing them. I've done my best to keep mine scuff-free, to no avail. My advice--buy them pre-scuffed. Find the best price you can and forget about it.

I put a nice scuff on mine yesterday. I'm 6' and when the bike is on the side stand you have to be very careful when hauling your leg over the top of them getting on and off the bike. I do like how quick you can take them off the bike.

Someone on this board recommended using Armor All and fine steel wool to get rid of scuff marks...Soak the steel wool in Armor All, Rub the steel wool in a circular motion on the scuff marks.... Said it worked great...Search the forum, maybe you'll find that post...

I used the Armor All and steel wool (0000) on mine after someone here recommeded it. It worked very well; the Armor All tends to darken the scuffs so they blend in with the rest of the case. Mine look great now.

I've seen several used sets around and the common dilemma is that, for the good looking ones, you can get brand new at Chicago BMW for `$100 more. For a better price, you wind up with some very scuffy items.

So, it's Pat's rhino liner (looks great) but was professionally applied or the Armor All and steel wool treatment (and hope they are really scuffs and not gouges).

It'll be getting too chilly (at least for me) to ride in Michigan soon, so I've got all winter to 'shop'.

And figure out someway to soften up my Aerostitch gear...

Run over to http://www.advrider.com and click on the Flea Market forum. On about page 3, 4, 5 or so, check out a post by Steverino offering a set for sale. I think they may have some reflective stickers on them but they might peel off and clean up nice. Good luck, Sarah

Somebody named Dino has a set, but I'm afraid, too scuffed for me.

If you don't want the full-size left, I got a buddy who does. If you don't mind, let me know what you decide to do. My advice--TAKE the full-size bag, I can almost promise you'll be glad you did. Ditto on what DK said. Used the Armour All and #0000 Steel Wool on my used system cases...cleaned them right up except for a few deeper gouges.

I think it depends on how scuffed the case lids are. When I layed my bike down the left case broke free upon impact and the case skidded on the lid. Wasnt no hiding that. I tried to make it blend in, but it was pretty obvious. In the end I was forced to buy a whole new case when the scuffed up one departed the motorcycle somewhere on an AZ freeway. The latch I had repaired didnt hold up. That was the most expensive part to replace of my little incident.
