OK - So I'm an IDIOT

So I stop at the Y on my way to work and am leaning on my bike talking to a Vintage Car Buddy. He says, they sure have strange "wear bars" on motorcycle tires - I look. I had ordered tires as I was down to the real wear bars but they sure went from there to point B in a hurry. I rode home like I was riding on eggs, parked the bike and took my truck to work.
Alan - whose new tires will be put on tomarrow.

You got all the good out of that tire, Alan. That's what I aim for every time.
It was still good for 100 miles to get you home.

I have a riding buddy (non BMW) who has done that twice. What happens is that the steel braid layer wears through and the loose steel wire folds back into the tyre and causes (at best) a slow leak. At worst, a rapid failure occurs.
It's always that last mm of rubber that seems to wear the fastest! Thank goodness for observant friends and bystanders.

Talk about getting max wear out of a tire.....that happened to me on the Bandit.
Yes, the tire was pretty squared off when I left the house.....upon return, 187 miles later, ity was a bit past Alan's....not my cup of tea.

Hey I did that with my last set! If it started to leak you could always plug it and get another 1000 miles!!!

Here in Oz, if you made an insurance claim with a tyre like that, they'd turn it down immediately as the bike is considered unroadworthy.
