From what I've read in local newspapers these past couple of years, motorists who intentionally injure or kill a motorcyclist in Arizona face some serious jail time. IMHO, other states should follow Arizona's lead!

This happened near where I work in Tucson. Really scary to know those folks are out there in cars. There was also another fatality a couple weeks earlier on Valencia near the Harley incident where a man on a Goldwing was struck by a left hand turning vehicle. For those of you who wear helmets, Arizona is a "no helmet" state so many of the accidents involve serious injury or death.

Helmet use is not the issue in this road rage incident, rather the motorist who was driving a motor vehicle while his license was suspended by the state. An all TOO COMMON scene in many motorcycle "accidents".

Arizona, like most states that don't have helmet laws for adults but do have helmet laws for minors.

The helmet use may not have been a factor in the road rage incident, but it certainly could have been a survival issue when he went under that other car. I don't wish to hijack the thread, but I'd enjoy a discussion if we had another thread going on helmet laws.
I'm not quite as extreme as the Capt on punishment, but don't you AZ guys have the tent city prison run by that mean Sheriff ? Maybe 15 or 20 years on the desert chain gang would do the trick for the guy.

I understand that the road rage had nothing to do with wearing a helmet. Road rage doesn't respect helmets. I also don't know whether or not it would have made a difference either.

There are a lot of people out there driving that do not have much self-control or that have a limit to how much pressure they can handle in traffic. I also don't know if the guy on the bike even did anything to piss off the obviously emotionally and perhaps chemically impaired driver. It could have been me just as well as him.

I probably shouldn't have added the comment about the helmet, what was I thinking?

Anyhow the memory of having been in a serious motorcycle accident thirty years back and taking my shattered Bell helmet back to the dealer and buying another one (limping a lot as the car that ran the stop sign knocked me across the intersection and I landed head first into the curb) I just had the momentary thought that a helmet might have helped. But you are correct about the zero correlation between road rage and helmets for those of us over 18 years of age.

I see over half the riders in Arizona where I live riding with those cool hankies over their heads and wonder what protection it provides; other than the wind maybe to keep the pieces together.

I just got back from Texas where I rode around for two days on the bike and the rest of the week in my truck. There appears to be a similar law there. It just seemed very odd to see people riding along without a helmet. Kinda like taking a walk in the park and forgetting your pants.

Well, it might, but it's motorcycle politics and thus worthy of discussion. I just thought to start separate thread. The victim in this deal may have been heavily armored for all we know, so it's a separate issue.
