Does anyone have experience of retro-fitting a light switch to a Rock?
I hate having the lights on when servicing and so-on.

Looking at the wiring it looks like BMW just fitted a plug with a shunt into the switch socket mon the loom, anyone know where the original disconnect is?

At the BMWRA rally, an older gentleman tried to explain the procedure for starting up WITHOUT the headlamp being on... very handy for leaving a crowded campsite in the dark, for instance.

It involved holding the turn signal cancel button for 5 seconds before turning the key, and something else. I wish I'd remembered, cause it really would be useful.

There are all sorts of good reasons not to have the lights off. I hate not being able to turn them off.

I'm not sure about the hold down cancel switch thing I can't see anything like that in the wiring (I may be being stupid). I think I'll just have to break into the loom and fit a switch.

Pease let me /us know how you get on and how to do it.. I am totaly pissed off with being told what to do/how to do it . all the manufacturers got together and decided to stop fitting switches. Because it was cheaper for them. The customer, who is that then.. I want to turn my lights off if I want and on when I need them. Or when I think I need to be seen. Hope you get on well. RR

Here in The States, at least, it's a law. You can get a ticket for not having your headlight on.

Here in UK lights are not compulsory. But the option has been taken away by the manufactures adopting hard wired lights, because it is easier and cheaper for them not to fit a switch.. RR

I think the light always on was born out of law, and manufacturer defense.
Yes, we could be responsible and always turn it on by US law.

But the first time someone on a bike hurts someone else with the headlight off, or gets hurt because the person in the car says "I did not see them" the lawyers will find a way to name the bike manufacturer in a lawsuit.

re the lights on/off dispute... I've actually lost sight of a car coming towards me completely because he was coming over a rise and the car behind him had quite bright lights. The lightys shone UNDER the first car for a brief moment and because the sky behind the two cars was light/white (fluffy clouds) I completely lost sight of both cars - had I been glancing that way preparatory to an overtake I may well have been killed. (as it was I'm experienced enough to be looking at the horizon or further for 90% of the time so realised exactly what had just happened).

There's a time and place for everything, and there are very definitely times and places when vehicles should NOT have their lights on.



I have tried to fit an old R1100S RH switchgear to my Rockster (in order to get the light switch), but the looms are different There's an extra plug on the R1100S switchgear loom that DOES plug into the Rock Loom - but the rest of the sockets/plugs don't match anything on the Rock.

Also heard that you can hold the turn cancel for 5 seconds, then the right turn button for 5 seconds to turn the lights off. Haven't tried it though.
