Picked up an 04 R1150R on tuesday. 5600 miles and $6800. Good deal? I thought it was. I stopped in the Harley dealer to order saddlebags for our Night Rod and kept looking at it from across the store. Someone traded it in on a Fat Boy. Took a test ride and thats all it took. Went back later that day with a check. Love the bike so far. Taking it to the dealer next week for the 6000 mile service. Was quoted about $162.50. Sound about right? Can I switch to synthetic oil now or should I wait for more miles? Anything specific to watch out for?

The price of a R would be set depending on overall condition, equipment, and extras...
I was looking at the used bike site in Germany, anything newer that 2003 was sold from 7000 euro and up (usually fully loaded with all axtras).
Is your R ABS equipped ? got any extras in the deal ?

In any case, 6.8K US does sound like a good deal...

As for oil, personally I've always used synthetic on all my bikes from day one...

BMW boxers maybe the one bike you don't want to use synthetic oil in too early. They take a long time to bed in, 10,000m is not unknown. Untill they do bed in then they will use a lot of oil. Synthetic will delay the bedding in. Most of your oil will be pissed out anyway so it seems pointless to pay for expensive stuff.

After the bedding in you should notice a cut in half of oil, at that point switch to synthetic if you like. The bikes do get smother and run nicer with a few miles on them.

I would recomend an after market exhurst like remus, the bike runs a little free'er. Less breathless at higher speeds, a little sharper.

I know it's not recommended ( by some) but I started using fully synthetic oil from about 1,000 klms (600 miles)...now at almost 50,000 klms I've just started using a semi synthetic.

I say if you want to use it..go for it..

No ABS. Bike is in perfect condition. Not a scratch. Came with the Sport Windshield which I'm not sure about. I'm 6' and the buffeting is pretty intense. Might take it off and see if I like it better without. Just ordered the System Cases from a dealer off E-Bay. Been riding a Moto Guzzi for the last year with bags so I'm spoiled. The backpack thing just isnt working!
I'll probably wait on the synthetic oil. I'll put some miles on it to see how the oil consumption is.

My $.02 FWIW, I switched to synthetic at about 2k miles and have been burning almost no oil since 1k miles.

The burn-in routine I used was to ride it like hell, at all rpms, all out from the moment I got. Worked like a charm to seat the rings. My mpg is also now up to about 40-45 mpg (from a low of 38 ) depending on ratio of city/hwy miles.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I only use synthetic oil when I KNOW I'll be using the kill switch alot over the next 3000 to 5000 miles.

Further to that, and regardless of dino vs synth choice, the viscosity range can then be determined based upon preferences for engine braking and side stand use over the prior oil change period.

The buffeting will go away without a windscreen. I normally take my sportshield off during the warmer months and really enjoy the peace and quiet.

I bought my R new and switched to synthetic at the 6,000 service. While I live in a very cool area I like to ride to the desert so the extra temperature range appeals to me. I never did eat all that much oil maybe a quart in the first 6K. I've gotten a pretty consistant mileage of right around 45 MPG ( I live in the mountians and do very little city or freeway riding.) It's varied between 40+ to 52 ( hwy 50 in Nevada) I am not a very aggressive rider.

We could all argue the pros and cons of sinth vs dino oil untill we are blue in the face, but in the end it's really up to what fits our specific riding style and climate...

Having very hot summers in Greece and moderate winters, and being an average+ speed rider, I have found that the non synthetic oil viscosity did not work for me...
On the other hand I used to drive a "special" 3 series that ate up sinthetic oil like there was no tomorrow, there I went with dino oil and more frequent oil changes.
Other than a Kawasaki KLR I used to ride, I don't remember any of my bikes eating up oil...

Looks like a good deal. as for the windshield, I added a Laminar Lip and have been very pleased with it.
