Got a huge box from Fed-Ex today with the system cases in. Also has a bag of bolts, emblems, reflectors, and locks. But no instructions! I can figure everything else out but how do you install the locks into the bags?

Sorry I can't help you but do you have a dealer nearby...they can make the locks fit your normal key so you don't need two keys.

Maybe a locksmith can do it too.

I recently purchased some cases via this board (thanks Herb!) and installing the locks is a snap.

1. Do NOT remove the key from the lock cylinder until it is installed. If you do, all the tumblers and springs will come popping out.

2. With case handles in the up/open position, place the lock cylinder above the lock hole, with the tab at the bottom of the cylinder facing toward the case handles.

3. Using a screwdriver or similar implement, press the tab at the foot of the cylinder in toward the cylinder. The lock cylinder should drop down into its hole.

4. You're in business. Snap the case handles down, turn the key to lock the bags and remove the key.

5. Note that if you want to re-key the locks to match your ignition key, it might be easiest to just bring the locks (with keys still in them) and your ignition key to the dealer before installing them. You can re-key yourself (see link from SJBMW) but personally, I think it's easiest just to let the "pros" do it. If you don't mind having two sets of keys, just use the keys that came with the cases.

Thanks for the links to the re-keying procedure. I was actually asking how to install the lock barrel itself. (yeah, I got them in) I might try the re-keying myself since the dealer told me they want 1/2 hour labor to do it. For $35, I'll give it a shot!

I orriginaly was going to pay the dealer to do it, but when i showed up they said that they were too busy and I would have to leave my cases over night.

No dice.

So I went home, read the instructions on the links.

And rekeyed my cases myself in >10min.

Though I got instructions with my cases and locksets, the instuctions were really poorly written with misleading illustrations - close to worthless.

It's actually not really difficult to key the locks to your ignition key and install them in the cases. I was able to get some great help from this board and some good photos and advice from the links you've already seen posted. Two things that aren't immediately apparent and that are, excuse the pun, key to a successful install are:
1) making sure you've got the right size tang (or whatever the flat piece that goes in the tumbler is called) - they are all very close in size and you want the ones that retract absolutely flush with the outer surface of the tumbler and
2) You do not fill all of the open spaces in the tumbler with tangs - I believe that the space closest to the top is left open. This drove me nuts until someone pointed it out - when the open slot is filled, everything appears to fit and work properly but you can't withdraw the key when it's fitted into the case.

OK, I tore into the lock mechanisms and it really isnt that difficult to re-key the locks. Figured I would see how many 1's, 2's, and 3's were in the original "line-up". Turns out re-keying the locks to the bike key will take one more #1 piece but it will be in the sixth place. Is it cool to just use the first 5 slots or should I see if the dealer will sell me 2 #1's?
