Greetings fellow BMRs,

While I continue waiting to get my owners manual from the local dealer, I am looking to you my friends with some questions......sorry if they are stupid.....I am pretty new to this......

1. What engine oil do you use? (I don't want to get into the brand discussion or synth vs. dynosaur) Is the oil we should use a 10-40, 15-40 etc. etc. ? I saw few different answers....

2. What type of oil should I use to change in the other components? trans etc.

3. A mechanical question and the one that might get me flamed..... When I put the bike on the center stand and spin either tire, I can feel the brakes rub and slow the tire down.....the tire just doesn't spin as freely on either front or back..... Is that a normal condition that is "engineered" in a bike?

Again, sorry for all the dumb questions, but I am pretty new to this and would like to make sure I keep my beloved rock 100% happy and smiling at me with those "only dad loves me" crooked eyes.......

The brake rub thing is normal.

You can use pretty much use any oil...the numbers like 10-30w or 20-40w are for different weather conditions.

Cold weather needs a thiner oil (10-30w)..and hot weather need a thicker oil (20-40w)..some top quality oils are 5-50w so they cover hot and cold weather.

I'm not sure what oil you should use in the final drive..I'm sure others will give their advise..I'm just starting the ball rolling..

That is true. I spun one in the show room just to be sure. hehe

Mine skwelches for like 10 meters and is annoying. I've made a few hard stops. Since then, it keeps getting worse. Everyone looks at my bike for the wrong reason. The dealer says it's just dirt. I sprayed the crap out of it with a pressure hose and nothings changed. I'm gonna take her in.

There's quite a range of oil you can use. So it says in the manual.

So,

I also was getting concerned with the state of the oil in my bike. I've been puting on about a 1,000 km a week. I puchased the bike with approx. 12,000 km on it. I just turned over the 16,000 km mark. And I still haven't done anything oil wise.

I went down to my local Beamer dealer (where I bought my bike). I asked what I should do and I asked if I should put any oil in. Also could I mix two different types of oil. Since I didn't know what was in there.

The answer I got was strict and quick. He said, "Don't do anything, don't mix oils. Your bike was serviced at 10,000 km, its next service is at
20,000 km!

I didn't ask why so bold of a statement. Since I'm a n00b, I feel it's better to hide that fact on the internet instead of public.

Any GL 5 Grease will do. I personally use RedLine Shock Wave gear lube. Others use Mobil1 and some stick to BMW stuff.

MArku, that is soo funny I thought that my manual was the only 1with had a rub in it or that somehow I got a bogus one now I see that it must have been a printing error!!

I do have a follow-up question. My BMW dealer is pretty far away and I have Autozone right next door. I am looking for the right oil filter. They carry a decent selection of Mobil 1 filters, but I have no clue which one I need.......it is definitely easier to find the right one for my cars....that's for sure.......any help on the part numbers for the oil filter I can use....???

But to be personally certain, hold the replacement filter up to the old one and insure the diameter of the outer casing and the diameter of the rubber grommet are a match (the thread diameter will be standard sized).
