I've looked high & low ( well...Google & local stores ) and I can't find a 1.75" exhaust tip to fit the cat.

Anyone have a source? A secret stash?

The market's flooded with what we used to call "echo cans" but no thanks.

And may I say the "Down Under mod" is just the sound I've been searching for! I had a Staintune collector and a reverse meg silencer and at low revs each exhaust pulse was audible. Not smooth at all. I blame the minimal silencer for that but on a whim I tossed the cat back on and..... "giddyup"!

Plenty of time for quiet when I'm in the box.

I went to a local muffler shop for the extension. They tack welded it on to keep it in place. The weld is very small, and on the wheel side so it doesn't show. Should I decide to put a muffler on it someday (not likely) I can just grind the weld down to remove it. Total cost was $15. I love the sound, and the price was right. It sounds like a motorcycle now. Thanks DJ for the idea.

I'm surprised you guys have so much trouble finding a tip to fit.

I have so many auto shops and muffler/exhaust shops near where I live and they all have heaps to choose from.

You know you could use a 2" size and make a spacer (sleeve) so it will fit tight..also I think the bigger size look better.

This is a 2"...it was a chrome tip that expanded from 1 3/4" to 2"...I just cut a slot with a hack saw and used an exhaust clamp to hold it on.

I struggled in the UK too DJ - not a very good selection in our car accessory shops either.

Turning to eBay UK the choice gets better - I got a 47.5mm pipe from this guy & it's great. See eBay item #330039903986 for an example.

I 'borrowed' a section off the industrial vac here in the workshop...

I found some site on the internet and ordered mine since NONE of my local auto parts stores had anything under 2". I'll dig up the details when I get home today. I think the final shipped cost was like $15. Check this post later this evening.

BTW, not to hijack the thread, but I tried this mod (removing the stock muffler and replacing it with this tip) but I went back to putting the muffler on. I noticed a considerable decrease in fuel mileage (about 10%), plus I noticed a hiccup/hesitation around 5,000-6,000 RPM under full throttle, like when I was passing. YMMV. I eventually put the muffler back on.

Thats great but it's over a foot long! The best I could find was a 2" diameter 9" long turndown. Apparently the only places these are easy to find are AUS and Cali.

Just a thought..how long did you try it for...did you re-set the thing-a-majig....I think it was something like key on..two full twists of the thottle..and key off..and then start..something like that resets the fuel injection thingie...although a couple of full throttle runs will do the same thing..I think..any one else know what I'm trying to say.

I have not noticed any hesitation or hiccups..and my local BMW mechanics so it should be no different to running with a sports exhaust..and far as performance and economy goes..(so he says)..

Also..I've tried a few different tips..I found a big difference in sound with different lenghts...and the shorter..and bigger diameter was way best.

I tried this mod for 2 or 3 months, a couple of thousand miles - long enough to know I wasn't satisfied with it. Never did a reset of the Motronic (I guess that's what you were trying to explain ) but I think mine would have "learned" about the missing muffler eventually and compensated for it.

I never reset anything and haven't noticed any differences in mpg or power delivery.

I reset my motronic, but I also did not notice any difference in mpg or power.

However, I did put the muffler back on because I think it looks better than the stubby pipe.

Well, JC Whitney was the first place I looked and that tip is too long plus I've seen their chrome before. Thanks anyway.

Necking down from 2" is a viable option but if it wasn't necessary...

I'd really like to find stainless but we know about beggars and chosing.

Fuel mileage? Please don't think me cavalier or blase but that's not high on my list with the riding I do.

So, maybe a 2" tube and a chunk of .125" wall to make a sleeve then?

I just thought I'd here of someplace I totally overlooked.

My latest tip is a short piece of 2" stainless with a 45 deg bend..and I found that by cutting off a 1" piece off the end..and cutting a 1/4" piece out of the 1" piece and squeezing it together..it was a perfect fit inside the 2" pipe to fit the cat.

The adapter I used fit over the cat pipe and inside the 2.25" tip I bought but not very well. I had to use a hacksaw and cut some slots on both sides of the adapter to let it flex enough to fit the pipes. Even then it was an extremely tight fit. Sorry I didn't take pics of that part but I wasn't sure whether things were going to work out The tip is 9" long and fires way below the hard bags. Obviously I used the stock chrome cover but I did have an issue with the clamp not tightening down enough. I had some old harley pipes laying around and just cut a section of that for a shim to get the stock clamp to funtion. I think I'll fall off the bike before it does Cost was around $6.50 I haven't had a chance to ride it yet as the weather sux here right now. I fired it up for a minute or so and thought it had a deeper growl to it. Time will tell whether it stays on or not

Nice job Brent...here's a few more pics of mine...you might need to angle the tip away slightly from your wheel..see how you go.

I found when you get a little water (condensation) spitting from the exhaust I got little specks on the side of my wheel..nothing that can't be just wiped off.

Ahhh, thanks for the tip DJ.... I didn't even think about the condensation that's easy enough to fix though

edit....I rotated it about 10 degree's from where it was. It may not be rotated quite as far as yours but still looked to me to be firing fully away from the wheel
