Has anyone here thought about , or even better installed a set of GS hand guards on their new R1200Rs?

I've seen an R1200R with GS hand guards on it. Looked OK, and the rider said it worked pretty well. Looked like a simple install.

I have never even seen another R1200R on the road yet.

Has anyone tried this yet.
Looking at the fiche there is a kit (71607687149) that appears to include everything. It lists for $95.
I'd hate to order it and find that a few more expensive brackets are needed.

You should be able to tell the delaer what you want to do and they should be able to help you. Should being the key word.

The next tim you're at the delaer, compare a 1200GS and 1200R to see if you and the parts guy can figure it out.

I have fitted GS handguards to my R1200R. The GS kit will fit but bar end weights of GS are fitted with 12mm countersunk bolts, the R1200R with 8mm cap head bolts (not sure if this is what you call them in the US, they are normal allen/torq bolts not countersunk).
You will need to have machined a pair of alloy spacers to enable the R1200R end weights and 8mm bolts to match GS 12mm countersunk sleeves in the kit. You will also need longer 8mm bolts.

That's the kind of surprise I was expecting. There's usually some kind of a problem when you buy the kit from one model and bolt it on another one.

Fairly easy to solve actually.. did it on my RS when I used GS handguards.

I simply used longer 8mm allen-bolts and a big "fender" washer on the outside holding the handguard and bar-end weights on.

A "fender" washer is a large OD washer with a small ID hole - used to be used for bolting fenders up to buggies (really..) hence the name. The solution cost about $0.15/per side to solve with a bit of browsing of hardware bins at your local auto-parts store (a real auto-parts store, not a large chain store..)

I had my dealer mount the GS hand guards on my R1200R. He solved the bar end weight problem by adding a Throttlemeister kit. Works great!

There are some additional parts required..

2 - M8 x 45mm or 50mm allen (or Torx) bolts (I used stainless)
4 - 0.875"OD x 0.375" ID washers (I had some stainless ones)
2 - 1.25" OD x 0.375" ID washers (I painted these black since I couldn't find stainless washers.) This type of washer - big OD, small ID is usually called a "fender washer" - used on horse/buggy to hold the fenders on.

Use one 0.875" washer in the center of the grip hole opening - this will center it on the bar-end-weight

Use one 1.5" OD washer as the first washer holding the guard to the bar end grip, and another 0.875" washer directly under the head of the bolt.

This sandwich of washers/bolts replaces the overly complex fastening that BMW uses on the GS (that comes with the handguard kit.) The mirror mounting that holds the lever assemblies in place is replaced with the ones that come with the kit, which have arms off the front that attach to the handguard supporting it at that end.

Total assembly time - perhaps 30 minutes per side. Put a towel over your fuel tank so dropped tools/bolts/bar-end-weights don't ding it.

Don , I have a pair of handguards from an R1150GS. I do not have the pieces that go from the handlebars to the center end of the handguards though. Do you know if they can be bought separatly?
I like your site. That rheostat knob is super sanitary.

Mark - I also had the R1150GS handguards from my R1150RS - and there was no way to mount them on the Roadster that I could find that would look "right" - so I sold them (got $60 or so) and bought the ones for the R1200GS. Seemed simpler and quicker to do it this way then try to cobble something up. The R1200GS ones look like they belong on the bike.
