I need to put hard sidecases on a 2003 -there is a rush to every set of OEM that comes up for sale on EBAY,MOA,IBMWR, etc.. I know which OEM stuff fits and know which topcase I want. Are there any other hardcase choices for the sides -which brands and who sells them?Are they a match to the OEM in fitment to the bike and waterproofness? (I have Roadgear soft luggage to use for now, but would like to avoid the rubbing on body work and using raincovers) Please share your experiences,thanks

Well for my 5 cents worth, I don't think there are any substitute for the BMW System cases - both in fit, finish and aesthetics. They are a perfect fit to the hooks and brackets and I feel very secure running at 70 mph they won't fall off. I know there are the Panniers that a lot of adventure riders like, but the black system cases on my black R looks great.

I guess the new price of over $700 for a pair of system cases pushes a lot of guys to the used market - I followed ebay and the other outlets you mentioned for months until I snagged a set at around $400.

There are a set of OEM cases in the sell/buy/trade area of the fourm right now in fact. Might check it out, lots of other stuff as well.

I also have the BMW side cases. They are the best cases I have had in thirty years. I bought the city lids, which live on the bike except for touring, as well as the standard, sanded them and painted to match the Atlanta Blue. Pricey but well worth it. Perfect in all regards.

I have looked-twice today!!! There are no OEM side cases on Buy-sell-trade! One of us cant see??? As for comments about OEM bags not falling off-read the "pin them on" information on this board-seems to be a common problem if you don't use retainer pins on them. I was hoping for comments on the Hepco-Becker side cases for the R1150R and whatever others that are out there...

The availability of the integrated cases (and BMW's long-term recognition of the real-world value of offering lockable, designed-to-the-bike luggage across its line-up) was a large part of the reason for buying a BMW in the first place for me. What a novel idea for a motorcycle manufacturer--a motorcycle (even a sport bike) could be a USEFUL acquisition! As a result, the required bracketry is usually nicely tucked into the design so that it's visually unobtrusive when the bags are off and functionally secure when they're on.

Certainly you could add a set of Givi's and never have a problem with the design or craftsmanship of the luggage, but the mounting system will necessarily be a compromise in appearance, if not function, and you'll have an extra key to carry. By the time you add the universal bracketry and its specific adapters, I doubt you'll be saving more than a couple hundred dollars.

I weighed the same decision, and concluded that, at least in this case, buying the brand was well worth the moderate extra expense. Now if you were talking about BMW riding apparel vs. after-market, I'd have a whole different response.

Bottom line, unless you're looking for a lot more carrying capacity than the stock cases can provide (i.e., some sort of big-square-box, GS-type expedition luggage), my advice is to save your pennies and get the BMW cases. The integrated key is your first clue that they were designed to fit transparently with your bike.

Just my opinion. Others may vary.

GIVI doesn't make a mounting bracket for my bike except the topcases & I am considering the GIVI E460 for that purpose.

The System cases are nice looking and well done. Only thing: I cannot fit my helmet into them. It is a Nolan, XL size not huge looking at it but there's no room into the case (the right one of course).This is a nuisance since I have to carry it along with me.

Have you tryed right way up and pointing forward?..I have been able to fit a few different types in mine..and at first I thought they would not fit.

I just attempted to put my helmet in my right side case today. I didn't think it would fit, but my buddy goaded me in to trying. With just the right orientation, it goes right in. I have a medium with full face.

This will be a boon to me after I get a few more miles in me and am ready to go 2up with the girlfriend.

Thank you DJ! After your suggestion (of course I thought I tried all possible way of storing my helmet in) I tried again and, if the case is completely empty and pushing a little bit the lid my helmet finally fitted in. I don't know how much the hinges will resist the stress, anyway now it works. Only caution I have to take is to put my helmet into its carry on sac to prevent scratching the visor.
