I purchased a 2004 rr from a local dealer. They did not have the bike book on hand, but have promised to get it to me soon. Here is the question. It only had ~1,200 Mi when I drove it away. What do I do as part of the break in? Hi rev. Low Rev. I don't know.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Low revs and lugging will risk glazing the pistons and bores. High revs risk blowing the engine. Just ride normally and don't do the following three things:

1. Don't lug the engine (below 2,500 rpm)
2. Don't maintain a single rpm level for an extended time
3. Don't over-rev the engine (above 6,000), but it's ok to blip it up there on the occasional gearchange.

I would take it easy the first time you ride around the block..after that 'gun it'..

Just riding like Mick has suggested is all you need to do..from day one..IMO.

You know I didn't really feel that I broke it in until 8,000 miles. Then she really came around, torque band and all. Truly, after 2 years of owning her, I feel that she has really came around. I will agree do not let her below 2500 rpm. My main concern for you is that the bike is three years old, you might want to look for flat spots on the tires! Metzeler all the way. Just got my last set of Z4's that I could find locally!

Just take it easy for the first half service interval (3,000 miles or 5,000 kilometres), then it's fine. Modern engines and modern lubricants don't require the babying that old stuff needed. Everything gets 'seated' at the factory.

Mine didn't really show it's 'run-in' period was over until 20,000 kms! That's when it seemed to loosen right up. I'm now over 90,000 kms and have just had regular 10,000 km interval book servicings, plus I fitted a modified cam chain tensioner (anti slap piston).

Nothing else, and she ceased burning oil at 30,000 kms when I switched to synthetic.

I can't remember exactly but I think the BMW recommended break in is no full throtle or hard acceleration until after the 600 mile service. And no more than about 75% for the next 400 miles. I started slow and after the 600 mile service started riding it as fast as I wanted. Variable speeds under 600 miles also suggested.
I don't think you can hurt it with 1200 miles. Keep checking the oil level as the do us some oil.
