messed with the electrical, need ideas....

Hi,
I installed an alarm system and made the stupid mistake of guesstimating cable colors instead of measuring (sorry excuse: time pressure), cramped the wrong cable and gave it juice... now I have a problem:

Bike runs on one cylinder until 4,000rpm, then the second one jumps on. After three miles, the catalytic converter gets red glowing hot.

Sounds to me like I killed the relay or a sensor, anyone with an idea?
A color coded wire diagram would do it, too.

Thanks for your help guys!

There's an old saying in Texas.......Actually everywhere......

"It makes no sense to close the gate after the horses have gotten out."

But I see where you may want to see where you went wrong with the wiring diagram.
I'm sorry this is not helpful, but maybe your post will prove useful to anyone about to begin such a project.

Edit: Oh, and I have a wiring diagram at home but not here...I'm at work. I can scan and send this evening.

Yes, I need the diagram to get the horses back in...
meaning it'll help me to figure out what I fried.

The project is actually a very simple one, I have installed all kinds of gadgets into all kinds of bikes... only that I didn't use my brain this time.

Thank you very much in advance for the diagram!

Another question to you, not really worth an extra post, but I guess you might know with so many posts: Is there any way to eliminate or lower the vibrations above 4,000rpm? 80mph in 5th gear is the end of the comfort zone with my motor.

The only thing I know is to get it tuned the best you can, with near perfect valve adjustments and then a spot-on TB synch. Other than that, I think its pretty much left up to the computer and the TPS which is set at the factory for optimum operation.

If it makes you feel better, the above 4K vibes seems to be normal for this engine. I too love that sweet zone at about 3500 to 3700 (70-80mph indicated in 6th gear), but if you get up there above 5K somewhere there is another sweet area of max HP which makes you forget all about the vibes.:-)

[I only have 5 gears on my '98 :? ]

I never liked "Beamers" before because I was lacking feedback from the road whenever I rode one (logical problem coming from Japanese supersport bikes). I bought the R1100R for a trip to Deal's Gap and fell in love with the comfortable, unbelievably torquey ride. I like the Twin so much, I guess even my next track bike will be an Italian twin!

Once I got my little problem fixed (read in another thread that disconecting the CCP might solve the problem), I'll get on tweaking the synch. With only 7.5kmls I don't think that my valves need adjustment, do they?

Thanks Boxer!

Here's the wiring diagram for the R1100R
If you can't read it, send me your email and I'll send a larger file.

The valves may indeed need adjusting. There are adjusted valves and then there are really well adjusted valves. There is a difference in how it runs. Plus they may be out from their previous adjustment at 6K miles. You never know if the person who did it last, did it right.

May l have a copy of your R1150R wiring diagram

Where i live a green wire is an earth or a negative
in BMW land it is a positive (go figure) i was actually running my fuel
pump backwards and was about to replace it when i figured out green is active and the pump worked fine after that.

What circuit did you clamp it with, lets speed things up a little and work
backwards.

The fault sounds like a HES (Hall Effect) sensor or relay, or maybe the
reliable (Oh No) Motronic unit.
