I had a 'supa' weekend

Post by DJ Downunder »

I just got back from Phillip Island to check out the World Supa's...here's my pics.

DJ

Image

I was on the road before light to make sure I was there early and get a good pozzie (position)...this was the top of Ringwood...6:30 am.

Image

This is about a mile before the bridge on to the island.

Image

This is the bridge on to the island.

Image

My friend Mick was with me (the red duke) and we stopped for breakfast at the bakery before getting to the track.

Image

Once at the track we parked under a tree for shade...it was going to be a hot one.

Image

Here I am getting ready to 'Slip/Slop/Slap'....do you guys know what that means?

Image

Next we bought some water..got a good poszzie..and put our feet up.

Image

GO TROY!!!!...(Bayliss)

Image

We were in a great pozzie...right where the bikes come out of the slowest corner..some get on the gas too soon and get spat off..right in front of us.

Image

The view to our left let us see most of the track.

Image

Time to check out some of the off track action.

Image

Heeeey....where there's promo tents..there's promo girls.

Image

I was just about to go in to the promo tent and this guy rolls up on an old Indian Scout...wow!

Image

Then once I got in to the promo tent..more wow!!!...another Indian Scout...wowser!!!!!!

Image

Yes the worlds fastest Indian...the real thing.

Image

I was amazed how small it is...it looked like a model plane without wings.

Image

They had the cover off one side so you could see all the rusty bits.

Image

There were heaps of other bikes there..the only one that caught my eye was the new naked R1.

Image

Image

I'm back out side and walking around the track waiting for more action to start.

Image

Action like this.

Image

I saw this girl ride her bike up to buy a cold beer then ride back to watch the action...cool...see the drink holder.

Image

Speaking of girls...cooo-weee!...sweet....I love Honda's.

Image

Talk about sweet...I liked this old duke.

Image

Aussie,Aussie,Aussie.

Image

Oye,Oye,Oye.

Image

There was some classic bikes every where...this one was traveling from Europe.

Image

I liked this nice new Truno...and it sounded great.

Image

To one extreme to another..postie bikes are so popular down under.

Image

This one had a surprise under the rear rack.

Image

This one had boobs.

Image

Can I say boobs.

Image

And who was the Worlds Fastest Australian today...my mate Troy Bayliss was.

Image

One last pic on my way home...another cold drink stop...did I say it was hot.

DJ

Thanks for the trip out to the races. Enjoyed the story and as always your photos.

RE : Slip/slop/slap...I did a lot of that during the 2000 Olympics when I got to visit Sydney for 3 wonderful weeks.
Even though it was only August, there were still days when we were slip, slop & slappin'.

This Olympic volunteer was also into slip/slop and slapping

And if I got a dollar for every "Aussie, Aussie, Oy, Oy, Oy!" I heard during those three weeks, I'd be a rich man right now.

DJ, no idea what slip/slop/slap is all about.
would you mind filling me in? Please, thanks...just another confused yank.
Per usual great pics and write up. When is your book "Motorcycling in Australia" comming out? I'm sure it will be a great read.

Thanks once again for taking us to the races. Had a great time.

From the American Cancer Society:

The message from the newly-formed Skin Protection Federation is simple: Slip! Slop! Slap! That means slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat to protect your skin. (Ozone depletion? ..............................Naah.) :?

I thought it had something to do with urinating in public, until I saw the gray-haired lady.

Corser wins race 1.
Bayliss wins race 2.

Corser crashes and gets T- boned by Barros but is apparently OK.

The supers is usually very relaxed. You can ride into the track, set up by the fence, wander around everywhere. It takes a couple of hours to walk a leisurely outside lap to check out all the vantage points.

The motogp on the other hand is wall to wall bike parking in the adjacent paddocks and much more serious. No bikes in the track that day!
Cheers...and stay horizontal!

DJ - You're behind the times. It's now 'slip, slop, slap and wrap' - Wrap on some sunnies!

Good pics, and so damn quick as usual!
