cee bailey 16"

Post by slow »

hi,

i finally was able to get a screen for my bike. i never had screens before this. i tried a cb 18" and found it noisy and shook my head badly at highway speeds. i figure i can either go up or down in height since when i duck under or raise up, i get quiet air. i figure the bike looks better with small screen, so, i picked up a 16".

my question is, how does one know once you find the right screen? i am asking because with the 16, i get a low level wind noise that i did not have with out any screen. the head shaking is all but gone except > 70mph and even then, i think i can live with it. i did the raise up/duck down test again, while ducking down does not change anything, raising up stabilizes the head and quiet the noise completely. does this mean i need a 14"? cb does not make a 14" unfortunately. i would hate to try the bmw factory one because though it is shorter, it is in a slight different shape. my dealer also doesn't offer trial with the bmw screen.

please let me know what you guys think

thanks

How do you know you have the right screen?

When you're happy with it.

Right now I have 3 - 16", 18" and 20" Cee-Bailey screens. Each is for a different time of year. Shorter = hotter weather, taller = colder weather. Right now I have the 18" on - and will probably mount the 20" this weekend. I have also tried the BMW Sport Shield (came on the bike) and the BMW Touring Shield (bought it.. and rather quickly decided a Cee-Bailey would be better for me..)

Given your description of the 16" and 18" - I'm guessing you need either the 20" or the BMW Touring shield. What you're feeling is buffeting with the 18". What you might try to test this - put the 18" back on - and take an old helmet faceshield and use BIG-ASS (tech-term) binder-clips http://www.sliceoflifetv.com/ to fasten it to the top of your 18" shield - making it 2" taller.

This will tell you if it moves the buffeting up enough to quiet things down for you, and if the additional 2" will be distracting to you.

The BMW Touring Shield - on me - left somewhat clear air at helmet height, but still also left considerable air-pressure on my shoulders. There was also some noise in the helmet due to the turbulent air hitting about neck height.

The quietest one I tried was the BMW Sport Shield that came on the bike. My head was in completely clear air - and turns out that's apparently how Schuberth designed their helmet to be used - it was VERY quiet and smooth at speed with the Sport Shield on the bike. Problem was - it was also difficult and tiring to hold on at speeds above 70MPH, and wet weather wasn't a lot of fun.

To really get a good comparison of what other people have used and how it worked for them - we need some idea of where your head is in relation to the shield. The best way I can think of to do that is - your height and your inseam measurement. (Someone 6' tall, with a 40" inseam will have their head at a different place than someone 6" tall with a 29" inseam..) So we need that info..

ahh thanks.

here is my info. i wear a shoe rf1000, i am 5.95 tall and have a 30" inseam. i have a standard seat with moto technique bar back installed so i am about a inch back from where i use to be and is slightly more upright -- which is what i am looking to get with the bar back. the 16 blocks just the right amount of air for me. if i sit straight up... and i mean _straight_, i can get clear air with my helmet with very acceptable breeze on my body. i had concern with bmw shield because i know it is of different shape/width. it is questionable whether my head will be clear as well as how much/little air it blocks for me at highway speed. but, the main concern really is that i can't return it if it doesn't work.

unfortunately, i no longer have access to the 18" since i can only take one shield out at a time. i don't really want to "abuse" the place i do business with since they have been pretty patient with me thus far. i am pretty sure that 20 will be fine for me. i just don't like the look. i was hoping to get a compromise by going low. i am also not big on changing things. i tend to just leaving stuff on onces it is install.

thanks again

Slow,

I have a 13" stock BMW touring shield that I could probably part with as I will probably never use it. Let me know. I have the 16" dark smoke Cee Bailey's that I think is very sexy. And also, there 20" light tint. Which for me works great (5" 11" / 30" inseam). This works so well you could almost ride without a helmet. Which I never do since purchasing this bike. This bike not only makes you a better rider, but aparentely it makes you smarter too.

See you on the road.
