New battery

"Dead" is not good karma for a battery; you can only achive that state 6-10 times before it becomes permanent, maybe less.

lmrbatteries.com (their analog name is "Battery Jack") seemed to have the best price (really the same price) as anyone. CycleRob's rec made me turn to them. They did not have the regular PC680, but I got the one with the metal jacket for $5 more, free shipping, arrived in 2 days, so I was happy.

You can get some regular-type batteries for under $100, but not very much under.

Get it ordered and get on with your life!

I have seen reference to having to make brackets or something for the Odyssey battery. What do you need to replace the stock unit?

The battery I took out had vertical connectors. The Oddysey has horizontal connectors. They can be converted to vertical with "L"-shapped adapters.

I turned my + connector 90 degrees and it fit nicely. I took and flattened my ground strap out and turned it 90 degrees too. No real difficulties making the mods, tho I do think the L-adapters would be nicer (but I forgot to order them).

Main thing is to get + on the right; Ã¢â‚¬â€œ on the left. I think this is standard for the PC680. I don't think there was enough slack to switch the routing left for right.

That sickening screech sound your starter made could be a broken magnet scraping the motor's armature -or- a bearing worn so much that the shaft's planetary like wobble both allows the same armature scraping and bounces the brushes off electrical contact. Either and both of these anomalies will crank slower and draw huge amounts of battery power.

I recently had my starter out to clean & spray penetratant grease the bendix spiral and shaft bearings but saw no need to remove the brush plate. My brushes looked near the new brush's full length size. The less you disturb the fragile carbon brushes and their perfectly matching commutator wear pattern, the better.
