But the story that went with the original posting of that picture included the information that the rider had been doing wheelies and stoppies routinely.

I don't know guys, my experience has been that this bike is VERY robust:

I replaced the telelever arm due to being slightly bent (still rideable), but the rest of the front suspension was fine. The shock survived well, it's just worn out - time for new suspension. I'm not drawing any global conclusions; just illustrating another side of the argument.
Any machine can fail, it just seems that the Japanese machines fail far less than the rest of the worlds. I've got a Honda Civic: when the speedo stopped working the car had 247,000 miles on it. Still on the road.
