all-
i have searched the discussions around handguard installation but can not find the definitive answer: when installing gs handguards and throttlemeister on the r1150r, does the throttlemeister have to be gs-specific, or can it be the one designed for the 'r'? as always, i am grateful for your feedback.

Re: gs handguards/throttlemeister compatibilty
I managed to do it on my bike. My Throttlemeister was not the model intended to be used with the hand guards, so I had to improvise a bit. I used the mounting hardware that came with the guards, and I found that a couple of garden hose washers between the guards and the Throttlemeister ends would fill the resulting gaps. To get the right side throttle lock to work, I used a nylon spacer and a washer that fit in the mounting bolt recess in the end of the unit. The spacer has to be long enough to securely hold the inner part when you tighten the mounting bolt. The tapered end of the mounting hardware will bear on the spacer while allowing the outer end to turn and lock the twist grip. If you look at how the throttle lock works, you'll see what I'm trying to explain. I found the spacer at a local Ace hardware store.
Hope this helps.

rick-
thanks for the feedback. as usual, a very creative solution. my r1150r throttlemeister is still in the box, so i'm pretty sure i can return it to the dealer and get an exchange for the gs-specific model. so...i'm still looking for the definitive answer to the question, although i'm pretty sure i'll be told 'yes, you need the gs-specific throttlemeister for use with the handguards.'

Re: gs handguards/throttlemeister compatibilty
You will need the fit kit for the GS w/handguards. Throttlemeister should exchange the the R kit for the GS handguard kit. The difference is in the washers, spacers, and length of the screws. You should also consider swapping for the long/large weights. The GS handguards have a portion which extends over the end of the bar end weight by about 1/2" with the shorter weights and can be difficult to operate the throttle side due to limited amount of grip surface. I have had the long throttlemeister weights w/GS handguards for 3 years and they work fine.

Re: gs handguards/throttlemeister compatibilty
Just a thought, since you can still return your throttlemeister ...
The Kaoko throttle control works perfectly with hand guards.
This is the item:

I don't have a good picture of it, but you can sort of see it on the outside of the hand guard in this pic:
