Re: 002 R1150R vs 2004 R1150R
Well I signed the loan today. Decided to put on the BMW bags and also the rear soft bag mount $95. As far as a windshield I am still not sure what to do. So for that reason I have opted to go naked at the moment. We did size me up for one and it looks like a shield height of 18 inches will do the trick. The BMW touring shield is about 2 inches to low. Now to investigate shields that are in that height range.
Also picked up a new battery tender and a HJC CL-14 red helmut (full face). Also looking to get a small BMW tank bag.
How many of you experienced riders use BMW tank bags? Or what do you suggest?
Thanks as always.

Re: 002 R1150R vs 2004 R1150R
I use the BMW tank bag. I wasn't aware of a small size being availible; mine is expandable by unzipping a zipper around the top, letting the bag expand upwards about two inches. The bag hooks over the tank at the front and there are two snap buckles at the rear which go into a fitting hooked around the rear of the tank and velcroed in place. The snap buckles seem a little fragile. if the bag is full, it takes a lot of tension to snug it down to the top of the tank, and if it's not tight, it sags to one side or the other while riding. Maybe I'm overloading my bag, but I like to fit in everything I'd need for the night and leave the hard-bags on the bike, where my camping gear goes.
I've had the rear buckles pop loose while riding, and that's a bad thing. There doesn't seem to be an easy way -- without unstitching the tape that fastens them to the bag -- to replace the buckles.

I have a Nelson Rigg magnetic tank bag. It is expandable, but also small enough to look ok while on a day ride.

You are correct there is only one size bag for BMW.

I have the BMW bag and love it. I use it almost on every ride. I haven't had any of the problems norrmad had with his bag. They are very expensive and I'm sure there are plenty of bags to be had at much lower prices.

Re: 002 R1150R vs 2004 R1150R
I ride an 03/ 50R with an Alaskan sheepskin on it and I am 28.5" inseam . I use the Cee Bailey onBMW touring mounts and it works great.Locktite/ lockwasher the WS bolts as mine vibrated loose in Mexico .I have risers and setbacks-see BMWMOA ON for ads. You made a mistake in my opinion, by not going with a Schuberth flip helmet. Check Adv rider website for a great flea market, plus it will kindle the fires to ride far away from home! I take it you already bought the BMW side cases-now get the liners that makes them even more practical. I opted for a Chinese cheapie top case on a better rest platform. It works and is an ebay 59.95 common item. You can spend more for Givi or BMW but a thief can pry all of them off your bike.I have a Wunderlich German magnetic tank bag that is as good as it gets, and very useful. If you dont have heated grips, they are nice but not absolutely essential. I will say -after the facts that you have already purchased-my 03 shifts much better than the 2000 1100R I used to ride-same tranny as yours. I just put 7000k on a pair of Metzler Z-6's and can tell you they still have much tread and thats on Mexican roads for most part-they are far more tire than the michelins that came on my bike.Enjoy!
Re: 002 R1150R vs 2004 R1150R
Well I have ordered the sheepskin from Alaska plus I won a Parabellum used 21" windshield on ebay yesterday. They way I look at the shield if I do not like it is there will always be a market to resale.
Now my only concern in mounting the shield is I have a curved bar-back arrangement and I believe the shield brackets use the standard bolt (Original bar location) for mounting. When I get the bike I will take a picture and show what I mean.
So here I go tweaking even with out the bike. I am doomed.

You use the same bolts just in the original holes on the triple tree.drsales1 wrote:Well I have ordered the sheepskin from Alaska plus I won a Parabellum used 21" windshield on ebay yesterday. They way I look at the shield if I do not like it is there will always be a market to resale.

Re: 002 R1150R vs 2004 R1150R
I don't think the holes will line up if your barbacks are curved. I have barbacks but the original hole is still avaiable for the mounting of a Parabellum shield.

I have a Cee Baileys WS that is the same as the BMW touring -same height as yours-it uses the bolts and mounts of the OEM. Not to dis your purchase but the OEM are not out there in front of you, they are hidden for most part. I can also attest that they will vibrate loose unless you locktite and lockwasher them!

Re: 002 R1150R vs 2004 R1150R
I tend to agree. The hex head is recessed into the curve of the barback. I have been searching the net for a pic but to date I have not located one. I am not sure who manufactures that type but sooner or later I will figure something out. If it does not fit then I will sell it.
Thanks for your assistance.
This is very close to what I have if not the exact ones.
