R12R Saddlebags

One thing I like is that the saddlebags for the R1200R are not painted. The first bags for the R11RS were gloss black, which I thought was goofy. I've gotten used to the textured black on later oilheads, and I notice that the ones for the 12R are satin black.

But I digress...I know they're spendy, but can somebody tell me what MSRP on the bags are? I know the mounts retail at $135. I priced the Givi rig out and with the tail rack they break $800.

That's interesting because I prefer the look of the bags painted and plan to have mine done. The satin black bags look 'generic' to me because they just don't match anything on the bike.

+1 I much prefer the painted lids. Every other manufactuer on their bikes with factory bags as an option, has them color matched to the bike, ie: Triumph, Honda, Ducati, Victory, Guzzi...

My RT (sand beige) had gloss painted matching sidebags and they were a nightmare to keep scuff free & clean
Stone chips, rubber sole marks from shoes, small marks - every mark seemed to be magnified 10 fold because of the glossy paint.

The standard black cases for the R12R are, in my opinion, much better suited for city driving and rough urban tasks.
Mine have been scratched, keyed, dropped and abused by the S/O climbing onto her seat & they still look good (or should i say well worn )

The R21R sidebags are big, versatile, completely waterproof and worth every single penny.

Just my humble opinion...

There's a used set of bag mounts in the buy/sell for $75 bucks. I just bought a new set of bags, locks, and reflecters for the R12R from ORD/BMW and the whole mess with shipping came to $753.00.

Unfortunately - it looks as if they're discontinuing them, and when I inquired about ones for the new style cases they showed no interest. Perhaps if enough people bug them about the new style cases... (hint!)

I'm glad BMW standardizes on the bags and mounts. I used to have a R1200ST and I bought the bags when I bought the bike. The bike turned out to have a lot of problems. When I sold it, I kept the bags since they fit on the R1200R.

I think the bags look OK. When I want the bike looking its best, I take the bags off.

Yeah, the ease of removal and relative invisibility of the BMW mounts is a plus. The GiVi mounts appear to be tubular, like the old BMW/H&B bags, and a little more noticeable. There's also something to be said for only needing one key.

Has anyone checked with Chicago BMW? I know they used to offer a 20% discount on BMW parts. 20% of $854 is $170. That brings the price of a pair of bags to $684 - a bit more palatable. And, if you live outside Illinois, you also save the sales tax (but you do have to pay shipping).

What did that run you for the panniers? How much more for the top case? Hands down, having the bags painted looks much better than factory black when attached to the Cristal colored R.

I've had my bags painted in crystal grey.
Way much better than the unpainted black ones (IMO)


But usually I leave them at home, they are to big in the traffic jams (in the Netherlands you are allowed to drive through the car rows with your bike, but our roads are narrow, the traffic jams terrible, so you only have a narrow passage).
I only use them for stay overs and vacations.
The top case of course is no problem.

By the way......in fact I think the top case is too big for the R1200R. Not the inner space, no, that's disappointing regarding the outside size, but it just looks out of proportion.

Good looking bike, Jouke. While I like the looks of your painted panniers and top case, I prefer my unpainted ones. Aesthetically they don't bother me at all and then there are all the reasons Eisen gave for leaving them black.
