Reconnecting the horn

Hi all,
I just bought a 03 R1150R. The PO was going to install an aftermarket horn on the bike. He disconnected the original, then decided to bail on the new horn. The OEM horn is now disconnected...he stated he couldnt remember which wires to connect. I have never played with a horn on the R1150R, is it difficult to re-connect it? Any advice or procedures would be much appreciated.

I just installed a Stebel Nautilus Compact [Friggin' Loud!!!] and took a few pics of the before. Hope these help.

Find the connector with the brown and green wires. If the PO didn't hack-up the connector, it should just plug right in.

FYI....the brown is ground....just in case they were removed from the plug. The plug only goes on one way.

after looking at those pics...it seems the brown wire goes to the left hand pin as you look at the female part on the horn.

Ok. It seems as though the wire going into the horn is not visible. Does this wire come from under the tank? I am assuming I have to remove the tank to find it. Also is there a place I can purchase the male connector if the PO hacked it off?

You should not have to remove the tank.

If the connector is hacked, my suggestion is to get rid of the stock horn. It is pathetic. Most auto parts stores sell the FIAMM freeway blaster (or something like that) horn. They sell a high and low tone, separately. Get the low tone horn, hook it up, attach with existing bracket, and for about $10 you will have a much better horn.

Rdsmith...I dont see the wire coming from the bike that connect into the horn. So I assume to get to the wires to connect any horn...the tank will need to come off so I can access the wires no?

Yes, the left/front wire is the brown wire.

The wires originate from a wire bundle under the left-hand oil-cooler. When I installed the new horn, I pulled the original horn wires back as far as I could to connect to the relay. In this pic, they're coming from in the bundle on the far left side near the red power wire. They're the black, covered wires going to the relay.
(Sorry I didn't think about taking a better before shot.)


In this pic, you can see the connector dangling on the lower left (and looping back around). This is near where it originates from the wire bundle. You can also see it's location near the tank mount.

Don't mean to hijack this thread......but....noticed my horn didn't work today on the ride home from work........found the green wire on the harness side of the horn had broken.......bike out of warranty as of 3/31........go figure........barely enough wire to do solder connection.......might work but wouldn't last long term......has anyone found a way to get the pin out ,so as to reconnect?......again sorry for the hijack...Tim

Ok, I can't find my camera right now so here goes...
If you look at the second pic above, there's a white clip around the inner grey part of the connector. You'll need to slide that over a little (should only need to lift-up slightly on each side of the clip). Once it's slid over, you can look down into the connector from the top and see a couple tabs (shiny bits) that hold the socket receptacles in place. Push down on each receptacle tab while pulling the corresponding wire from the rear and the wire should slide out. When sliding out, makesure the tab stays depressed (it might take a little extra force since there's a weather seal around the wire).
I'll look around for my camera, but this should be enough.

neat pics..

if i had that info 2 weeks ago i could have removed the plug neatly instead of 'surgically'
i looked at the plug for ages but just couldn't suss the clip

i saved the plug so there maybe a chance to refit if necessary.

Anyone know if the socket(plug from the wires coming from the harness) can be purchased seperately thru BMW or any other place. And if so the part number maybe?

Sounds like the perfect time to buy a horn and crimp on a couple of female blade terminals!

+1 on that. The original horn was so wimpy and installing the new horn was easier than I imagined. Just get all the parts you need before-hand so you're not stuck going to the store without the bike.
