I just got some luggage mounts and can not bring my self to pay another 40$ for the OEM machine screws to mount them. I was told that the mounts use a 6mm screw, but I noticed that the front and rear are different sizes. Does anyone know the screw sizes?

If memory serves correct, the rear bolts are a M6x30 or 35 and the front bolt is a M8x35 or 40. You will need a total of 4 M6 and 2 M8 size bolts (torx / fillister head) found at any hardware store.

Real OEM says: 4 x M6x30 and 2 x M8x20.

Just checked the online catalog for the 1150R, it shows two (2) Fillister Head Screws M8x40 and four (4) Screws M6x30.

The M8x20 is correct for the GS style mounts on a GS, I found that the 20 was too short for my rockster when using the GS mounts and supplied spacer.

Make sure you use some blue loctite on the threads, or you will be leaving on the road. The factory bolts are pre coated with a dry loctite. How do I know, left 2 somewhere between New England and Ohio.

The Loc-tite is a great idea I always worry about vibes loosening anything on the bike. My standard solution involves nylock nuts, but there is no way to connect them to the tail.

BtW I used M8x40 and M6x30 stainless hex head bolts and they fit nicely.

Have those who "lost their luggage" experienced failure of the System Case mount(s) - e.g. fasteners falling out, as per this thread - or have the cases themselves somehow failed to hold on to the mount rail?

Think I'll have to reattach the hardware on our bikes with red Loktite now, just to be sure!

My first thought when seeing this thread's title was about a mounting system to hold the cases when off the bike and in storage. Others have used wooden rails to accomplish this task, with some shaping to fit the mounting hooks fore & aft. Something along these lines has also been mentioned in johnnyjs1's "Parts/pieces you wish you had, but no one makes" thread.
