I want to talk about knives

This is my every day carry (EDC?) pocket knife. It is a Timberline "Timberlite" that I got from LL Bean or someplace several years ago for $12. I has the Neeley Lock system but that is worn and it doesn't truly lock anymore. It is small, 2" blade. It is light, zytel handle. It is quite useful.

The spear point lets me do precision cutting like you would with an exacto knife. I've use the serrated edges to prep Cat-5 cable for crimping on RJ-45 connectors. Mostly it opens boxes.

It is supremely useful but it is small. I would sometimes like a larger one, which I've seen on ebay.

There's a local store with an awesome collection of knives for sale and I've been tempted by a few CKRT and Benchmade models.

I also have the desire to get fixed blade boot/neck knife to fix inside a tank bag, not for protection, a small one for general camping use...opening bags, spreading peanut butter, and such.

Great knife, slim, sharp, light and quick to open. I have had it for years but bring $$ to buy it now. I thought I had lost it for a while and was going to replace it with a Benchmade Griptillian. Nice piece also.

Oh, and knife No. 2 is a good old Swiss Army Tinker model - with the Phillips screwdriver in lieu of a corkscrew!

Very useful, stays on the bike. I have used it to build a tower, overhaul a 1993 S-10 and perform brain surgery. (patient didn't make it)

But the tower is still standing and my S-10 still runs!

This is the white boxer shorts of pocket knives. Case brand with 3 blades...non locking, so I can close it with one hand.


I use it for everything from opening packages to cleaning fish... and I love using it. Stays sharp and fits neatly in my pocket.

The school system changed the rules about length of blade that is legal on school grounds so my 3" blade is now a weapon and I have to leave it home when I go to work. That really messed me up, 'cause I had developed the habit of feeling for the three most important things in my pockets...wallet, keys and knife...now I have to leave the "Case" at home.

The Axis lock on my Benchmade is very fast (some people think it is a switchblade when I 'whip it out'!) and easily closes with one hand. But is also very secure from closing on your fingers! Important lesson for me and I have the scar to prove it!

Yes, one handed opening and closing is a requirement for my pocket knives. I don't have any with assisted opening, but I'd like to get one someday.

It's just a little bigger than my Timberlite but still a good pocket carry size.

In my car, or in a pack when camping, I carry one much like the first one you posted, Brian.

But, this one is never far from me: the Bear Claw (the picture makes it look like it has a dull point - it is nothing close to dull).



A friend who owns a gun store in Texas gave it to me for self defense, but it is no good at spreading peanut butter. Believe me, I've tried.

I always carry this

and a small hi quality foldable scissor for trimming the `stache and frequent paper cutting. Really surprising how much it gets used !!


For when things get tough, I just got one of these .



I saw it in the HF store on my last visit and couldn't resist it's $8 on-sale price. It is SO heavy, 1.25lbs (0.57kg), gorgeous looking and the two row alternating sawback teeth are dangerously sharp, able to cut down small trees. The compass inside the waterproof endcap looks and works great too. An 8" Stainless Steel blade, flawlessly machined Aluminum handle and 14" overall (20.3 & 35.5cm), it's a serious adult toy. The ad says "Rambo wished he owned this knife". I believe it.

The CR was an anniversary gift from my wife about 10 years ago and has been a companion, carried every day since. It has been with me throughout the U.S. on fires and tree climbing on the East Coast, and has skinned plenty an animal. Although I work hard for very little, like many I appreciate well made machines be it a knife or a Beemer. Plus I can drop the knife off at Reeves on the way to work and have cleaned / sharpened and pick it up at lunch free of charge.
