Hello,

how much they cost in the US ? Do you think it will be possible to purchase the bags there (you know € vs $ ) and have them shipped here?

List price for the bags is about $1,000 (IIRC), but some dealers will give a 20% discount => $800.
So, at today's FX (1.56833) that's about €510.

However, before you start jumping with joy, please consider shipping costs within the US and then overseas.
The tricky part is the shipping as the boxes are quite large to accomodate the bags.
In this case I think the size will have more of an impact on airfreight than the weight and unfortunately you'd have to go with airfreight since the US Postal Service was not able to get a shipping line interested in a sea freight contract.

Unfortunately I don't know what the rates would be, nor what the box dimensions and weight were, but maybe someone else here can help out.

Have you looked at the Givi V35's? They would be easier for you to get. I have them on my R1200R. I went with Givi because I could get a smaller top box the E35. I like the setup.

I think you're right Shipment will cost more than 250$ which is the difference in price for the bags bought here.
Bobby, do you have pics of your bike with the Givi on??

I think the Givi's look great on the bike, however they do not have the attachment system that the BMW bags have and require installation of a set of bag frames that don't look good (personal opinion). As far as I'm concerned, the Givi's are only an alternative if you never ride without the bags.

Will the Givi mounts work as mini crash bars when no bags are mounted in a tip over?

I don't think they'll give that much protection in case of a tipo over I saw a bike here in Italy without the Givi bags and the mount seem to be very "light" (I mean able to keep the load of the bags but not giving protection).

Last May a friend of mine, on his Transalp with aluminum boxes, merged into a line of cars exiting the freeway. He was daydreaming, and since the cars showed no brake lights, he assumed that they were moving. They weren't. He realized that he was closing on a car at 70 mph and successfully jinked left, but his right side bag hit the car and he was catapulted down the highway. He's still on crutches, in external fixation, and facing more operations (6 already). He'll never ride again (in deference to his wife.) He made a stupid mistake, and it's a freak kind of accident, but you wanted to know if side bags will protect you.
