Muffler Question

Wow, thanks for all the good input!

Being just becuz it's the least expensive route, I think I'll start by
removing the can & attach a simple turned down tip. Mite be
too loud for my bad ears (straight pipes on Harleys are physically
painful to be near for me), but easy to give it a shot and not much
to lose.

Not looking for loud, but would like a little growl when I get on it.

Just for S & G's, has anyone ever tried modifying or removing some
of the innards of the stock can? I see there are screws on the back
that look like it's possible to pull the guts out?

It's nowhere near as loud as an open piped Harley. A growl is basically what you get. Really, in my opinion it's a near perfect sound... the dear can hear you coming, but it's not loud enough to bother people.

Thanks for the links w/the Zach. Sure does sound nice!

UTube also showed a link with a Hattech, that really sounded nice, too.

Hard to compare, the original in the Hattech comparison sounded more like
the real thing than the original in the Zach comparison. They probly sound
very similar in real life.

Would enjoy hearing one with a Staintune if anybody knows of one or has one?
Just for comparison purposes. But I don't think there could be a whole lot of
improvement on the way the Zach sounds. At least for my taste.

Do you know the weight of the Zach and where in the U S can you buy one? I'm thinking about it for sliming a few lbs off the bike.( 50% of my traveling is 2 up ) I belive the stock can is 29 lbs. The cat is off ( Y-Pipe ) And the Zach sounds nice.

i dont know how much the Zach weighs, but it does weigh less than stock.

Both the Staintune & the Remus sound pretty nice.

The Remus is about the same cost as the Zach etc, but the Staintune sure is a spendy thing!

Just for the sake of asking, has anyone ever opened up the stock can and did a little selective surgery?

I see there are 3 bolts on the end and the cap comes off. also, looking down the center tube, I see there's
a perforated disk in it near the inlet end. Was wondering what it would sound like removing at least some of
that disc.

also, is there packing around the central tube? I don't remember, but I believe I remember seeing it's perforated?
Was wondering how it would be removing the perforated disc in the tube and then packing hi temp glass around the
tube if there isn't some there already.

I put an aftermarket muffler on my 5.9 SUV that is a straight thru perforated tube with hi temp glass packing around
it and I absolutely love the way it sounds - a low throaty growl, loud enuf to enjoy when I get on it, but otherwise
just enuf to make it sound like there's "something under the hood" (I wish!) but not at all offensively or unpleasantly
loud, and none of that cherry bomb rap or Flowmaster drone. Something that's easy to live with on a long trip.

I'm probly gonna check that possibility out pretty shortly, within a couple weeks. Will report back.
I paid the princely sum of $65 for my name brand aftermarket muffler for my SUV. Not real keen on spending over
$500 just for an improvement in the sound of my bike if there's another way that might cost next to nothing.
I picked up a little wad of KaoWool at work - it's real hi temp glass used to insulate boilers and other hi temp
things. Should work great for permanent packing if I end up using some.
