Brakes + clicking noise

okay, so this is my first post (just joined). I own an '03 Rockster (my first BMW) and if this is how BMW's generally are, i can safely say im never buying a different make again haha

i do however, have a question to do with the FRONT brakes.

when the bike is not turned on (so everything's quiet) and i roll the bike back and apply the front brakes i can hear a small click, as though there's movement in the pads or something, same happens if i were to then roll it forward after and so on..

the click stops once you have clicked it in one direction e.g. if the click happens while stopping in a forward motion, it wont click again until the bike is stopped in a backwards motion..

sorry for over-complicating a fairly simple query, just wondering if any other users have had this happen? or if anyone could shed some light on it..

It'll be the pads shifting slightly in the callipers - nothing to worry about.

(they have a small amount of space either side so they don't jam, when you move the bike they're dragged one way or t'other and so "click" against the walls of their living space. )

I was looking at mine tonight to see if they do the same and they do. I believe it's the retainer clip on the back of the caliper that's causing it. The pads shift and that clip moves and "clicks" with them...odd as I've never heard that on any other brakes before either. Oh well, welcome to BMW-ville I guess

Just another thought, being that your bike is an 03'. The front rotors are the floating type and they have a bolt bushing a washers that hold it to the wheel and allow the rotor top move slightly in the axial possition to conform with the pad movement. Sometimes the washers and bushing wears out resulting on a clicking sound.

Place the bike on the center stand, hold the front wheel and see if you can move the rotor back and forth in the direction of rotation....if so you have worn bolting, do change it before it affects the hole in the rotor and you'll have to get the rotor as well.
