Lane splitting

Post by bikermeow »

Hiya, guys ...

Just thought that I share a youtube video posted by one of my mates. It pretty sums up how we in Singapore get home everyday.

Looks pretty tame tbh, compared to Central London. ;) (although his stopping distances are a bit short).

BTW - that speedo - is that KMh on the outside (big numbers) and mph on the inside (small numbers)?? Never seen a speedo marked that way round.

What was the bike?

one day I'll put up on youtube some footage through london - although I'm sure there's already some on there. :)

Sounds like a BMW twin with an aftermarket exhaust.....that's the way to get from point A to point B, albeit a bit risky.

You guys are observant!

So do I give the answer on what bike out now or wait till there are more guesses?

Yes, traffic is not as heavy as London (I have great memories of seeing the police cars mounting the kerbs to get around), but drivers here are not as polite! Bikers are second class citizens, unfortunately.

I'll go one step further.....

It is a BMW twin for sure.....could be a R1100R or an R850, the gear selected in the video is 3rd or 4th and the exhaust is definitely aftermarket....my guess a Staintune way too mellow sounding.

Did I win the price???? =D> =D>

It is a BMW. Yes, that is on the speedo.

The exhaust is stock, save for the mid-section (clue! clue!)

Do I tell you guys the exact model or anyone want to hazard any more guess?

Drawing upon all my parasychological powers I come up with the following

Bike - BMW R1150R
Color - Black
Exhaust - Cat replaced by Y pipe, stock muffler
Suspension - Ohlins, front and rear
Protection - Plastic valve cover guards and in addition, front mounted tubing cylinder guard, painted black.
Lighting - Auxiliary road lights mounted on the above tube cylinder guard
Mirrors - Stock

I'm exhausted.....do I win anything?

Speaking of lane-splitting...I was out in Los Angeles this past week for Thanksgiving with my daughter. She took me around to some places on Sunday and then again on Tuesday, using the freeways. I had never seen this before! When the sport bikes zoomed past my window no more than inches from the mirror, it scared the crap out of me. She saw them coming in the mirrors but I was oblivious to them until they roared past my window. We weren't standing still either! The car traffic was moving at about 60 or so and these guys just zip between at 70 and 80..or more. Pretty scary!

Oh, Boxer, you are a hardworking one; ......... but ...... No, you don't!!!!!! [-X Cos' it's not my bike!

Ya, lane splitting in Singapore is a way of life, pretty much about 3 to 4 feet between cars, but there's no other way to beat the jam on a bike. The key is to hold the bike steady and check the body language of the drivers; they tend to be moving out of the lanes if they are looking at their rear view or side mirrors; that is a clue to danger. It is illegal in the USA but only in some States?

Mystery Bike to be unveiled in 24 hours ... counting down. (or when someone hits the BINGO button!) :D

The Mystic seems to be created for the US market. Not many produced (about 3,700) but they come with a sort of fuel emission control system (forefather of the charcoal canister?) which is absent on older airheads:

Image

They do appear from time to time on IBMWR and I think there are some dealers selling them, e.g.

The Mystic is essentially a special version of the R100R, which is a paralever / oil cooler equipped airhead.

IIRC they were prduced for 2 reasons:
1) to satisfy still existing demand for the airhead at the end of it's production run, after the R1100 Oilheads had come on line.

2) to get shot of a lot of old airhead parts still on the shelves... ;)

I live in Washington State, the drivers here would try to kill me if I did any lane splitting. It IS illegal, but unlike California where they have tolerance for bikes, here they have none. They can't stand it if anyone gets ahead of them.
I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.

At the risk of being internet-lynched, I'll say this ... I love airheads. They are simple, and the oilhead's only bane is that they are not so simple.

On lane-splitting, so in States that are illegal, what will happen if a bike lane split? Vigilante justice, public hanging or what? It is unimaginable to me.

I believe it is illegal in every state in the USA except for California, where there is no stipulation either way. Our cops do it.

For those other states, it's usually vigilantism especially out here in the West where cowboy justice rules. If you can't ditch the do-rights while on your bike, brandishing your weapon will often have the lynch mob backing off. Unless they draw theirs of course; then you had better hope you've spent enough quality time at the range.
Traffic signals timed for 35mph, are also timed for 70mph.
