Magnetic Tank Bag

Want to get a tank Bag for extra touring capacity.
Looking at a Givi one with magnetic retainers.

Has anyone had any trouble with the magnets? Heard that they can erase credit card information, affect digital cameras and other electronic devices - is this true or just theoretical possibilities?

Would appreciate any advice

I've used an inexpensive magnetic tank bag for a number of years now and throw my wallet, my mp3 player and and my digital cameral in when I'm traveling with no ill effects. I suppose that there is a theoretical possibilty that the magnets can affect credit cards and electronic devices but in practice, this doesn't seem to happen.

There are some negative side effects though. If you leave the bag on for extended periods you can get markings on the tank from the magnets and there is a real possiblity of scratches if you're not careful about where you put the bag down before you put it on the tank.

BTW, if you are looking for a resonably priced, serviceable bag, I can recommend the Nelson-Rigg I bought from these guys: http://www.newenoughhp.com/luggage/tank ... k_bag.html. I will second what Charlie said for the most part. I used a magnetic tank bag for quite a while and was generally happy with it. You have to be careful and keep it clean or it will scratch the tank. No issues with credit cards or digital cameras though. And it is easy on and off for gassing up.

However, I switched to a Held bag that uses the SW Moto quick connect system on the gas fill ring. Several companies use this system and I really like it. As quick as a magnetic bag but never touches the tank.

I have used tankbags since I started riding and the bike never leaves home without one. The quick connect system is the best I have used.

I use a magnetic tank bag. It is a Nelson-Rigg model similar to the one Challey listed. As long as you keep the surface of the tank, and the base of the bag relatively clean there should not be any problems with scratching. Never had any problems with credit cards, cameras, ipods, cell phones, etc.

I've got a Marsee magnetic tank bag. Don't use it regularly (have a tail bag which I prefer) - I put my wallet, cell phone, digital camera, etc. in the bag when I am using it. No problems.

I've tried many tank bags with magnets and straps. Now I have a City Bag from Bags Connection (Twisted Throttle sells 'em). It has the gas-cap tank ring mount that is a little tricky to begin with, but after not-so-much practice, you get the hang of it. But... I had to put some foam inside the bag to cover the internal tank ring hardware.

One thing I didn't consider while bag-hunting was (until waking up a whole campground last year) the width of the bag closest to the handlebars. Some of my previous bags were wide enough that, when I was negotiating a parking spot, in gravel, in the dark, after midnight, the bag would sound the horn when I turned the hanbdlebars far to the left (this would also happen in tight city parking lots). The Bags Connection City Bag is narrow enough to avoid this problem. I find the bag to be of good quality.

The only other tank bag I have, that fits the bike and doesn't sound the horn is the OEM model. It's quite large but narrow at the front.

Good advice! I had an old R90 with a wide tankbag and it hit the kill switch doing a U-turn in heavy city traffic. Leaned over too far to save it! Embarrassing!

I have a Bags Connection Day Pack tank bag with the quick release. I really like it, and it is very convenient when you get fuel. You can get them in different sizes. It does not touch the tank at all.





Previously, I had a Big Mak tank bag, which just flips up.

This is not related to the original thread but I am looking at the screens on Twempie and rdsmith3's bikes.
Can you tell me if these are these OEM screens? My bike has an OEM screen but it is much smaller than the ones pictured. I'm wondering if the fittings are the same and that maybe I can just buy a replacement screen?
Can I get some opinions please of these larger screens..... noise level and protection etc..

Both screens pictured are the BMW touring screen. Mounts for the touring and the sport shield are the same.

I was beaten to a reply but here is a picture of a sport shield I no longer have for comparison. I still have a tinted version of one but haven't used it in a while. Like the little 'speedster' screen better. The touring shield and sport shield use the same brckets. The speedster shield is a different bracket setup.
