Hard Bag Question
I just bought a set of hard bags. I have never even touched a set until they arrived this week. I finally got some time to look at them today and I was going to remove the locking mechanism to replace them. I encountered an issue that I am not sure how to deal with.
The bags are both unlocked and open with no issue, but there is a red tab sticking out from the lock. This prevents total closure of the handles. NAd removal of the locks themselves. Ugh... disappointment.
Did the seller (who shipped from North Carolina. I'm in Connecticut) unlock the bags and then relock the lock (with the bags open)? That is what it looks like to me, but I am unfamiliar with the bags.
If this is the case. how should I proceed? It is a hike to my dealer, and I am not even sure that they will be able to help. Will a locksmith be able to pick the locks maybe?
Thanks!

Re: Hard Bag Question
Hawkman,
I think we can help you with this. Clear the picture up for me. You say the locks are installed, the both handles are up, and the bags open ?
The previous owner took the key with him because it was his ignition key probably. Not a big problem, I think. Here's a link to a discription of the rekeying process. You can rekey it to your ignition key. Inside that cutout for the handles there's a small hole at the base of the lock. I use a small allen wrench in that hole as a probe to release the lock. The following links will give you detailed instructions to rekey the lock. No need to go to the dealer or the locksmith. And don't be too hard on the seller. If he had pushed both handles down and locked them before he pulled the key, the fix would have been far more difficult.

Thanks.... I have the directions to pull the locks out for re-keying, but unless I'm missing something, the locks are locked open and I can't pull them out with the tab open.
I have some photos for reference. http://picasaweb.google.com/E.Hochreiter/UntitledAlbum#
Am I correct?

Re: Hard Bag Question
I'm not sure. it is my belief that once you push in the small pin hole spring, you will be able to lift the lock straight out. I don't think it has anything to do with the tab. Once you get the lock out that tab will be free to move.Hawkman wrote:Thanks.... Re: Hard Bag Question
I think you may need the original key to retract all the (other) wafers into the barrel of the lock (after you depress the bottom wafer with your little pusher tool) so that it can be removed. But it's been a while since I've done this, so I could be mistaken. A locksmith could pick it in short order, though.

Re: Hard Bag Question
Can the 1st owner make you a copy of his key and then you just carry two?
Re: Hard Bag Question
I just re-keyed my whole bike and bags not two weeks ago. I am almost positive you do not need the original key to remove the tumbler.(not a hundred percent because i had the original key) The system case doesn't use the pin like the ignition or gas tank. It uses the last blade as a retainer. When you probe around in the hole you are pushing in the last blade at which point you should be able to pull the tumbler out. Be careful that the blades don't fly everywhere. If i remember tomorrow I will check to make that it is possible without the key. Good luck.
Re: Hard Bag Question
I know there are some tutorials out there for this, but I can't find them at the moment!
I think you'll need the key to get the current tumblers out, then you can easily re-key them to match your key. Check with a local dealer - they should be able to help you out.

Here's yet another view of the process...

fwiw, I thought you could remove the cylinder with or without the tabs locked in place?
I went through a similar situation with a set of bags I purchased on-line. Mine were locked shut however. I ended up having to get a key from the seller as the cost to have a locksmith pick the lock was high.
best of luck-

Re: Hard Bag Question
The lock cylinder cannot be removed in that position. It must be in the UNlock position. You have 3 options:
1--Drill the lock out. Very messy and likely to damage the plastic female lock housing.
2--Get the key (temporarily) from the last owner (if possible).
3--Have a locksmith pick the lock . . . . then set it to your ignition key.
2 or 3 works for me.

Re: Hard Bag Question
Oh yea! and before you return the key to your vendor, file a couple of new grooves in it for being a dork.
