Did you have to supply your original pan?
I noticed on the Rick Mayer web site there is a $500 deposit on the "Seat Pan". How does that work?
What I would like is a new seat, but I get too keep my original seat just in case.

Am I the only one to finally like my original low seat ?

It felt a little hard at first but I think it was because I was kind of tense... not very confident riding this new bike for the first days.

I noticed that this original seat was very pleasant and efficient if I slided my body in front in tight proximity with the gas tank.... more feeling of the bike movement and vibrations, more infos, more control.

I am pretty light but once again I never tried to ride non-stop more than 150mns....

So I guess for me its more HAPPY BALLS ! than....happy buns

It looks great on your bike. Before I saw your picture, I was tending towards a Russell Day Long, but its looks simply didn't go with the lean look of the bike. The Mayer is toned down, while still looking quite comfortable.

How long did it take to get it from the time you ordered?

Hello, folks. I am new here. Planning to purchase R12R this summer and making a list of desirable mods; Rick Mayer's seat is one of them.

How much was it, if not a secret? Did you have to send him your stock seat to be rebuild? (apparently not given the picture of the 2 seats).

Looks nice - pricy devil, and prolly not available in the US (requires shipping your seat back to them - I assume for the pan.)

A US alternative - which I'm continuing to be happy with - is the Sargent update of the stock seat. Looks very good, sits even better. It's a not-think-about-it seat. So far - even on long days - it's been pretty much a non-issue, at least as good as the several Russells I've had on other BMs.

YBMV (your butt may vary) - but although I was hesitant to go Sargent again since I had one bad experience with them on a K75S seat - in this case - I've been quite happy with the results, from not only an appearance and comfort standpoint - but also from price. I believe with the discount a few of us were offered who had asked about an R12R seat before they had anything - it's a cheaper alternative than any others I've heard of. And it's the only one I've heard of with a money-back-give-you-back-your-old seat 30-day guarantee (costs $60 to have them reinstall your old foam and cover on the seat if you hate the new one.)

My only regret is I didn't have heat added to it when they did it.

The seat is the leather Grey. It is a dual seat, but I have not had a chance to get input from the copilot as to her comfort. I will report asap when that happens, probably next weekend because I am going diving over the weekend way out in the Gulf of Mexico.

I have no idea how long the color will last, but you can order a seat protector to cover it if parked outside and when in rain.

The deposit works like this: You send the order and note for Rick to build it on one of their seat pans. With the order, per instructions, you send a check for $500.00 which they hold pending timely receipt of your exchange seat pan as set out in the order form. They will return the un-cashed check after receipt of the exchange pan. One thing you might ask is whether they have one available for the build as of your scheduled build date. I had a delay in my original order date because they did not have a seat pan available at the time to complete my build. A great product takes time, but is well worth it. Highly recommended !

BTW: Rick himself called me one evening and apologized for the delay in shipping. That is great customer service !.

I sent the order just before Thanksgiving week. The original quoted build date was January 23, and actual date was March 1 or 2 best I can figure. Again, this was a result of not having an available seat pan to do the exchange build. If you are in a hurry either send them your original pan (requires not riding!) or get one off e-bay or where ever.

Judy and I went for a long ride today.. about 350 miles total to give the Rick Mayer seat a good workout. This was the first time Judy had ridden the RR since the seat was installed, and she formally rated the seat as an absolute winner . She had refused to ride the RR again with the stock seat, so you see the importance of todays run.

Usually we both had to get off after an hour and walk around with the stock seat, and were uncomfortable for any length of time. Not with this new seat.

The longest run we made was about 2 hours nonstop and the seat was still comfortable.


This seat is a winner, and well worth the price paid for it. Highly recommended .

I have made a couple of 500 mile days easily. The Boss (Dr. Judy) is very, very happy with her rear seating setup. We did a 4 hour ride for lunch recently which included a local road with a lot of twisties including a couple of 90 and 270 degree turns requiring peg scraping lean angles if you are going more than about 20 mph. She said that she felt much more stable during the maneuvers on those, because she does not slide forward and get jammed into me.

Since I have been riding the seat for a while, it is actually getting more comfortable as it is getting broken in for my butt. This is probably the most important upgrade I have made to the bike at this point because the enjoyment factor is now off the scale! The only thing I can think of for improving the ride now is a suspension upgrade.

A side benefit of the seat is that people constantly notice how much better the RR looks with the gray leather seat which closely matches the granite gray metallic paint of the bike. I was sitting among a bunch of Harleys and some fancy custom bikes at a Heart Association function, and everybody came over and looked at the RR for a long time commenting how nice it looks. Pretty cool feeling!

BTW: I just changed the Conti Road Attacks for the Michelin Pilot Road 2's and they seem to be an improvement on the handling as well. Cornering after the scrub in period shows very good traction at least equal to the Conti's, which were pretty good. I hope the dual compound setup makes for a better mileage on road.
